BillBrasky Memorial Political Chat Thread

Normal country.

Gab feels less putrid at times but still is probably a step above what your conservative family member posts on FB

off the cuff public answer is probably /pol/ - 4chan's politics board, but I've been in a private Discord or two that got p awful - I have tried to stay away from private Discords where you can get traced

depends on how you define troubling I guess

How does one get into these private Discords? Do you have to like prove your loyalties or whatever?

Normal country.

That's really bad. Yet again Democrats learn the wrong lessons from elections and chase after lost votes.

All Democrats need to do is back firefighters, EMTs, and teachers like Republicans back the police. These are relatively noncontroversial occupations that provide public services. Firefighters and EMTs are a form of "socialism" everyone likes and Democrats need to go all in defending public education.

I'm coming from spending a few hours a day (on average) on right-wing platforms for research. Your clarification (bringing in apolitical individuals) makes more sense and is different from celebrating a lack of political engagement, which just isn't true from my perspective.

lol at the second paragraph.

However you take it, the left needs a better strategy for bringing in apolitical people with strong feelings that doesn't require a ton of prior knowledge. Backing popular public workers is a way to do attract them.

Right before Parler folded some people I followed were posting links to one. I'm sure there are some that are more strict about who they let in. I haven't gone far down that rabbit hole though. Kinda just staying up to date on research I did for my master's thesis.

Durbin just endorsed Hawley’s amendment to add 100k cops to the reconciliation bill. Cites Biden’s cop hiring program when he was a Senator in the Clinton years and says Dems were tough on crime then and tough on crime now.

History repeats itself. Just truly truly awful. Fuck all these democrats.

Politics, man...

Fear of being vulnerable to the accusation of "soft" on crime...!

Crime, like housing policy or the latest capital strike, is another area where local and national media box politicians into a corner.

It's never framed as a social symptom or with any sort of time-scaled context or comparison, it's just scare tactics for viewership. "Defund" might be a losing issue for Dems, but there's plenty of support for gun reforms or marijuana legalization, both things that would have a demonstrable and straightforward impact on crime rates, whereas writing cops more overtime blank checks doesn't seem to do shit.

There’s no corner. Any voter who wants basic “tough on crime” rhetoric is going to vote Republican. Any voter who thinks there is a problem with policing and wants some change is going to consider voting for people who provide an alternative. Right now, Dems do neither.

There’s also a broader media issue. Do Durbin and Booker actually think the people they want to reach are going to see what they did? Is Fox News going to give them credit? Probably not. But people who would possibly vote for them and don’t like this are more likely to see it.

Democrats (especially centrist Democrats) do a great job of allowing Republicans to frame the messaging on an issue and then scrambling to try and find their footing on turf that's already been laid out by Republicans. You'd think at some point they would realize that it doesn't work, but they never do. What's really amusing is that Republicans frame Democrats (and especially progressive Democrats) as this all-powerful, sinister force that controls everything and victimizes Republicans, when incidents like this show that progressives don't even control their own party, much less seriously threaten Republican power. Many Democrats seem as frightened by what Fox News and Trump voters think as many Republicans are.
