BillBrasky Memorial Political Chat Thread

I don't know how much of it is increased visibility with social media and whatnot, but it does seem like kids are way more politically active then when I was growing up.

Social media helps. I think the big thing is Gen Z has grown up with global economic collapse and pandemics, so they understand that big things happen at the societal level and impact everyone. So change is not a hearts and minds issue. It's structural. They're able to recognize the multiple ways the world was screwed up before they got here and the shit sandwich they've been left. They're know they can't just work hard and succeed and even if they could, it won't uplift anybody else without real structural change.

Bernie Sanders was definitely an important progressive voice. But a few cycles from now, it's going to seem quaint that the leading progressive was an old white man.

everything about this sounds like the received understanding of millennials too.

Lol at Ph "you didn't build that"-ing Bernie.

Political Chat Thread - All Topics & Rants Welcome

What is awful about it?

It’s awful “Black friend” logic. It demeans the endorsement. It also laughs at legit criticisms of Bernie’s “class not race” approach in 2016. It cheapens the work Black progressives did helping him get up to speed.

I disagree. Just because those "criticisms" are valid, doesn't mean that people can't highlight evidence contrary to those criticisms. Why is it that the black leftists can be talked about as political tokens? Seems hypocritical as shit, that Bernie should be critisized for the black politicians he doesn't support, yet not receive any acknowledgment for the ones he does. But I guess anyone to the left of Jim Clyburn might as well be Diamond & Silk.

There's a major hypocrisy in the Democratic Party of conflating establishment ideology with black solidarity, and you're damned if you dont support it, and damned if you make any point to the contrary of it. To be clear, I don't think that Ph is making that conflation, but I do think that people should take that conflation into account when they see leftists who are especially proud of black leftists or proud of Bernie supporting black candidates. We aren't trying to tokenize anyone, we're just defensive because for the last 5 years we've been unfairly hit over the head with this white bernie bro narrative that paints our political movement as racist, or race blind.

I give Nina Turner and a whole host of people as much, if not more credit than Bernie for building out Our Revolution and the grassroots infrastructure underlying today's left. But I don't see the identity politics the same way you do. Put another way, I give The Squad credit for The Squad's accomplishments, not Bernie. But I don't think it's quaint to say that democratic socialists in Congress are one shoulder they're standing on and the other is their forebears that were congresspeople of color. It's important to build the class consciousness and class politics coalition alongside a coalition that recognizes and supports people of all colors, abilities, genders, etc.

I’ll trade you guys Biden in November for Dan Forrest in NC.

See people on the twitter arguing that 2+2 doesn’t equal 4. Is that actually serious, or are they trolls trying to play on 1984.

This is fake right... right???
