BillBrasky Memorial Political Chat Thread

Dan Forrest has no appeal outside of just regurgitating evangelical and trumpy talking points. Dude has no charisma and no original thoughts. What do you like about him?

I was not accusing you of anti-semitism dude.

You know what you did. Don’t back down. Just admit it. I didn’t call out Bernie for being Jewish. I wasn’t using “code.” You hate me. Whatever. But reading anti-Semitism into my post is unnecessary. I shoudn’t have to agree with everything you say to count on your scorecard as not anti-Semitic.

I give Nina Turner and a whole host of people as much, if not more credit than Bernie for building out Our Revolution and the grassroots infrastructure underlying today's left. But I don't see the identity politics the same way you do. Put another way, I give The Squad credit for The Squad's accomplishments, not Bernie. But I don't think it's quaint to say that democratic socialists in Congress are one shoulder they're standing on and the other is their forebears that were congresspeople of color. It's important to build the class consciousness and class politics coalition alongside a coalition that recognizes and supports people of all colors, abilities, genders, etc.

I’m not sure what that has to do with my point or your disagreement with it.

Ten years from now the movement will be heavily influenced by young people who will barely remember who Sanders is. And it’s a forward looking movement that won’t dwell on the past with “party of Reagan” type worship.

See people on the twitter arguing that 2+2 doesn’t equal 4. Is that actually serious, or are they trolls trying to play on 1984.

This is fake right... right???

It’s an argument about the nature of truth. 2+2=4 is only true under specific parameters. 2+2=5 is quite possible outside of those parameters such as 2.4+2.4=4.8.

Ph, I read that MHB comment as just reminding you that Bernie is Jewish, not just "old and white". I dont think he was calling you anti-semitic.

That’s ridiculous. So he wasn’t accusing me of being anti-Semitic. He was accusing me of forgetting Bernie is Jewish. That’s some gaslighting nonsense. Do better.

What? I'm not gaslighting you. Referring to a Jewish man as just white, in the context of national politics, is a certain level of identity erasure. I dont think you did it with any ill-will, but I agree with MHB that it deserved mentioning.

Would be very similar to referring to Pete Buttigieg as just a young white politician, without mentioning his being gay.

.

I don’t hate you. And i wasn’t calling you anti-Semitic nor insinuating anti-semitism. I was clarifying an important part of his identity, which is often erased when people refer to him as an old white man.

I don't think in the future Bernie's Jewishness would make him seem like an unlikely leader of Progressive politics in retrospect. And I resent MHB trying to add that into my post because I specifically did not make that point.

everything about this sounds like the received understanding of millennials too.

I've observed a distinct difference in teaching sociology to millennials vs. Gen Z. Millennials needed more help connecting the dots about structural forces in our society. Gen Z knows it and are ready to fight.

Yep, pretty much. If you want a Ron DeSantis or Brian Kemp-type governor in NC, then by all means vote for Forrest. He's an Evangelical/Religious Right shill and avid Trumpite. IMO, he'd be worse than McCrory, and probably even more under the thumb of Art Pope, Phil Berger, and the NC legislature if that's possible.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this before, but I went to junior high with Dan Forrest for a couple of years in Charlotte. I wasn't great friends with him, but we played some sports together. He wasn't going to be the QB at our high school, so he moved to SC to some high school where he thought he could play, and that was the last I saw/heard from him - at least until a few years ago when I found out he was Lt Governor of NC and at least partially responsible for that stupid bathroom law (or whatever it was). I was totally blown away when I found that out. He was a nice enough guy back then, but was far from an academic superstar. I remember him as being a bit of a pretty boy and an ass kisser. I think his main goal was to be the QB and date a cheerleader. If you told me back then to pick 100 people from our class that I would want to end up governor of NC, I don't think he would have made the list - though I believe his mom was/is Sue Myrick, so maybe that should have been a clue.

On a semi-related note, I also went to junior high with Josh Stein (in Chapel Hill before moving to Charlotte). I was a 7th grader and he was in 9th grade, so we weren't exactly best buds, but we had some common friends. He did seem like a bright dude - even back then.

It’s funny to me that Wake Forest grads misspell Dan Forest.

People are really pissed about not being able to go the gym. Like 90% of the people on my FB feed pissed at Governor Cooper mention the gyms being closed.
