Climate Change & Natural Disasters Thread

God he is such a cunt.

No doubt. And yet the voters in TX voted to reelect him over a very capable opponent in 2018, albeit by a much smaller margin than is usual for Texas. And they'll likely reelect him in 2024. Given that, why shouldn't he abandon the state and go off to a warmer vacation spot? There doesn't seem to be many political consequences for these Republicans who do or say terrible things, as Collins and Cruz both prove.

[h=1]Ted Cruz’s Cancún Trip: Family Texts Detail His Political Blunder[/h]
The Texas senator faced fierce blowback for fleeing his state as a disaster unfolded. Text messages sent by his wife revealed a hastily planned trip away from their “FREEZING” family home.

Text messages sent from Ms. Cruz to friends and Houston neighbors on Wednesday revealed a hastily planned trip. Their house was “FREEZING,” as Ms. Cruz put it — and she proposed a getaway until Sunday. Ms. Cruz invited others to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún, where they had stayed “many times,” noting the room price this week ($309 per night) and its good security. The text messages were provided to The New York Times and confirmed by a second person on the thread, who declined to be identified because of the private nature of the texts.

If Mr. Cruz intended to leave the impression that he meant to stay for only a day, his large suitcase and the group text messages Ms. Cruz had sent planning a longer itinerary suggested he had cut his trip short. NBC reported separately that Mr. Cruz had rebooked his return ticket on Thursday morning.

When Ms. Cruz wrote to the group text chain of neighbors trying to weather the extreme conditions early Wednesday, she said the family had been staying with friends to keep warm, but quickly pivoted to offering an invitation to get away.
“Anyone can or want to leave for the week?” she wrote. “We may go to Cancún.” She teased a “direct flight” and “hotels w capacity. Seriously.” Ms. Cruz promptly shared details for a Wednesday afternoon departure, a Sunday return trip and a luxurious stay at the oceanfront Ritz-Carlton in the meantime.
No one appeared to bite, but Ms. Cruz did extend a more practical offer. “We have gas stove so at least we can heat water little that there is happy to help anyone we can too,” she wrote.

In normal times this would likely end Cruz's political career, but given the way things are now the TX GOP will just close ranks around him, they'll offer bullshit excuses like his kids just wanted to get away (their current excuse), they'll deflect to something awful that LibDems have done, and this will blow over and he'll get reelected in '24. Same old story.

He admitted on Hannity that he was gonna stay all weekend but started to have second thoughts on the way down. So you see, he would’ve done the right thing anyway. He didn’t need the derision of the lamestream media.

Pretty hilarious that one of the neighbors in that group text leaked the messages to the New York Times. Pretty well shows you what they think of the Cruzes

I didn't think this could get any better and it got much better. Serious debate about who has better neighbors, Ted Cruz or Rand Paul.

looks like they left their dog behind in their freezing house. Dog's name? Wait for it.......Snowflake.

Texas, Land of Wind and Lies: When post-truth politics meets energy policy.

Pretty much.

...Why, then, the all-out effort to falsely place the blame on wind power?

The incentives are obvious. Attacking wind power is a way for both elected officials and free-market ideologues to dodge responsibility for botched deregulation; it’s a way to please fossil fuel interests, which give the vast bulk of their political contributions to Republicans; and since progressives tend to favor renewable energy, it’s a way to own the libs. And it all dovetails with climate change denial.

But why do they think they can get away with such an obvious lie? The answer, surely, is that those peddling the lie know that they’re operating in a post-truth political landscape. When two-thirds of Republicans believe that Antifa was involved in the assault on the Capitol, selling the base a bogus narrative about the Texas electricity disaster is practically child’s play.

And if you’re expecting any change in the policies that helped cause this disaster, don’t count on it — at least as long as Texas remains Republican. Given everything else we’ve seen, the best bet is that demonization of wind power, not a realistic understanding of what actually happened, will rule policy going forward.
