COVID Thread 2: Operation Ludicrous Speed ! (Super Political!!!)

Given that conservatives love to compare New York (Cuomo) and California (Newsome) to Florida and DeSantis, and to praise DeSantis endlessly, this article in the Miami Herald raises some interesting questions. Apparently wealthy communities that donated substantial sums of money to DeSantis and his political organization received the Covid-19 vaccines far ahead of most other places in FL.

That's why they like DeSantis. He takes care of their people.

The Biden administration worked with CVS and

Update: The federal government made the COVID-19 vaccine available to all school and day care workers of any age in Florida on Thursday.
In addition to CVS, Publix, Walgreens and federally run vaccination sites will provide the vaccine to all workers at pre-K, K-12 and day care centers in the state.

The chain also began vaccinating day care and preschool teachers Wednesday, even though Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had not yet opened the vaccination program to them. CVS is giving inoculations in two dozen cities across the state.
CVS said it is following Biden administration guidelines released this week, which are broader for educators than Florida's. For teachers, Florida has limited the vaccine to classroom teachers 50 and older who work in kindergarten through 12th grade. The federal guidelines allow day care workers, preschool teachers and educators in elementary, middle and high schools to be vaccinated with no age limit.

DeSantis then caved and opened up state distribution to all teachers.

Fucking California witholding 40% of the vaccines for the poors now, it's gonna be October till I get mine. Meanwhile, all sorts of folks in red states posting for their shot pictures on the facebook.

They are still reading every word of the covid bill in the senate thanks to that pederast Ron Johnson....7 hours in.

The Senate is ridiculous with these weird one person can make everyone do something rules.

One minute the read out every world of a bill. Next minute the bill is only available for a few hours before they vote on it. It’s a ridiculous way to govern.

According the the Los Angeles Times, "the poors" still have to meet the same criteria as "the rich". They are just focusing efforts to get the vaccines to those that qualify (and need it most), but might not receive it without a dedicated change of strategy.

Seems like a great way to change our political demographics. I am very encouraged seeing those numbers in minority groups.
I have been surprised/pleased with the enthusiasm about the vaccine among evangelical trumpy latinos that are in my circle.

Or, yet another example of Democrats having to save Republicans from their own stupid ideas.

It's worth checking out the survey data tool. You can look within subgroups.

Yes, those drill-downs are helpful

34% of Republicans 65+ say "no" or "unsure" - we're going to bump up against those numbers in the next couple of weeks within that age group. Hopefully a large majority of "unsure" go ahead and get poked.

Says that he wants the "best" vaccines for his constituents and until he runs out of Moderna/Pfizer he won't be accepting the JJ vax. I'm worried he won't be alone in this line of thinking that JJ is a 2nd rate vax, even though all are equally effective at preventing hospitalizations and death.

the problem is that this is the codicil attached to the JJ vaccine. I just hear the chorus saying "that's great but I'd rather not get sick at all and if I have a choice i guess i'll wait."

But I’m guessing there’s a high crossover between that group and the “one poke” crowd.

One shot J&J gives about the same numbers as Brits (Public Health England) are now claiming for one shot of Pfizer or AstraZeneca.

Working for a largely conservative company that primarily serves the DOD has provided a consistent, repetitive, baffling run of COVID experiences. I'd be surprised by the percentage of college educated Republicans that are maybes on the vaccine if I wasn't watching it unfold personally on a daily basis. We really don't have any nutjobs of the "COVID is fake" variety, but we have plenty of the "I get that it's dangerous, but as long as I'm not around old people all the time I'm not going to let it affect my life" types.

We've now had more than 20 people get COVID out of a 120 person office that I know of. Even the guy who got COVID and was seriously ill for 2 weeks, gave it to his wife who ended up in the hospital for 10 days and almost had to go on a ventilator - even THAT guy was meh on the vaccine and said his experience didn't change his opinion at all. Basically uses the "you could get hit by a bus, fall and break a leg, get food poisoning, etc. - no point living in fear or pumping yourself full of new meds for something that's really not all that likely to kill you" approach. One guy's daughter got COVID but he didn't get it so he's down for a vaccine in "a year or two, once we really know what's going on." Then a bunch of folks are like - yeah, that's what I'm thinking, etc.

It's infuriating.

That's ambitious given a) we don't know yet how many people will decline the J&J in favor of the other vaxxes and b) that is anticipating zero supply chain issues with imports of materials needed. There is currently a massive bottleneck with our West coast ports that could wreck a lot of plans if it gets much worse.

Got to love the port authority unions.
