If all current college football players in 2020 get a free year of eligibility, how does this impact schools ability to recruit for 2022? I assume there are a lot of scenarios.

Are schools still capped with the same number of scholarships?

If a college coach allows all current players to stay next year does this Mean if they don’t have open scholarships they cAn give any out to class off 2022?

Also, can players in the 2022 commit right now?

Will Wake benefit from all this chaos on the virtual recruiting trail?

It would be great to have someone explain recruiting for 2022...

Apparently, in 2021 (next football season), the NCAA is giving a one season reprieve on the 85 scholarship limit for football. So, teams can give up to 25 scholarships for the HS class of 2021, even if all 85 players on scholarship in 2020 decide to return. However, the 85 man scholarship limit returns in 2022. So, some FBS schools could have close to 110 scholarship players in 2021, but there will be a reckoning before the 2022 season. Here are couple of articles explaining the situation: https://247sports.com/college/arizona-state/Article/ASU-football-scholarship-cap-eligibility-NCAA-rules-150758631/#:~:text=%2D%20The%20NCAA%20is%20giving%20exceptions,back%20under%20the%2085%20cap.&text=Some%20schools%20give%20five%20years.

Also, is the 4 game rule still in effect going forward? Hypothetically, what if Nick Andersen for whatever reason is able to only play in four or less games next year? Would he be a 3rd year freshman in 2022?

Under the current rules, the answer to each of those questions is yes. There will be some really strange class determinations for some players next year. An example is Sam Hartman. Starting next year, he will have started games in 2018 (9), 2019 (started 1 -- played in 4) and 2020 (12 if WF makes a bowl) and will have thrown for almost 6,000 yards, but will be considered a red-shirt sophomore. Hartman could start games every WF season from 2018 through and including 2023. Crazy.

So would that be considered the Hartman Era?

Class of 2022 kids could get screwed royally. In 2021 everyone gets a pass on scholarship numbers, so the rich (literally) will get richer. A school could have 110 on scholarship. Back to the load up recruiting of the 1970's.

However, apparently the 85 limit will kick in for 2022. What will coaches do? My guess would be some combination of encouraged graduations of players with eligibility remaining, undergrads pushed into the transfer portal and a smaller class of 2022 freshmen.

I would guess some coaches would go "all in" on experienced players and sign few freshmen in 2022, figuring on filling in from the portal and grad transfers.

I think it means that most RsJr will be pushed out this year and next unless they are starters or in a position of great need. That may be the best way to cull the herd since they have had 4 years of opportunity and should be graduating.

Going to be some damn good walk ons available in 2022.

You're basically stuck at 20-22 for 2021 kids unless you know you're in a position like Florida that has 19 Seniors this year and 14 guys graduating next year(including Kyle Pitts who will be gone after this year anyways) so they can afford to take a huge class this year

For someone like Wake, they'll be right at the line of 85 with attrition of next year(+ x amount of current seniors and grad transfers)

For 2022 they'll probably sit around 18 but 20 seems like the absolute max unless you expect players like KW3, Greene, Hartman, Bothroyd to leave after the 2021 season to the pros
