State of Wake Football

No doubt our players will break all kinds of school records, but it’s a little odd to count them, knowing these players were all given an entire season more than what all the current record holders got. Guess there’s no way around that though, besides the dreaded asterisk.

110 will require careful management if all are funded. With the transfer portal, you could lose young talent buried behind down the chart and depending how the numbers constrict in the future, there will need to be a plan on that works with new recruiting classes. Sort of an NFL cap situation where GMs become key players in roster manipulation. Big opportunity here for programs who manage it well, but not without pitfalls.

Wake will be as good as our offensive and defensive lines. If we can use the "free" year to develop more depth and quality on the lines we could have some great years. Grobe essentially going into early retirement while still being the head coach set the program back but Claws seems to have the passion to keep pushing forward.

I am more optimistic than Creamy re WR, probably because I'm higher on Morin. I still expect Groulx to become an ACC caliber receiver. AT has all the tools, it's just mental mistakes and he is only a Soph. We have multiple prospects we haven't seen much, like Banks and Williams, who will get to use this as a redshirt year.

There is a huge drop off at RB after CBS and Walker, but is that unusual to have a divide between your top two backs and the rest of the roster? Flowers opted out, which was disappointing. I hope he stays at Wake, which he said that he is. If not, we have multiple promising RBs in the 2020 and 2021 classes.

All that said, I fully expect Roberson, Walker, and CBS to be back next season. It's way too early to be worried about the roster in 2022.

Our football program was in a good "state" on December 10th, 2013.

Griffis has played in 3 games compared to Kerns' 4. Is there any thought that Clawson is trying to get the 3rd string QB more reps than normal because he is the more likely starter after Hartman, or is this solely because of the free year of eligibility?

Kern has 5 runs and 16 throws while Griffis has 2 runs and 6 throws with a TD. Do not have info on snap counts.

Another interesting statistical tidbit, Career rushing attempts for CBS- 208 and KW3- 204.

Seems like he's just getting them both reps. Smart, because you never know who might be taken out by contact tracing.

I don't have a great sense of separation between Griffis and Kern. When Hartman exhausts his eligibility in 2027, if both are still here, it will be an interesting competition.

IMHO, playing both quarterbacks is being done for both short term and long term goals. Wake has not had a quarterback start all the games in a season in many years.
Therefore, the #2 QB, Kern, needs game reps to be as ready as possible when his name is called with a game outcome depending in part on his play.

Longer term, Sam Hartman will be a sophomore, for eligibility purposes, NEXT year. Clawson is taking advantage of the eligibility rules this year to see what he has in freshman Griffis.

Will either or both Kern and Griffis be willing to potentially sit behind Sam Hartman for three more seasons? That would take a lot of patience.

One of the highest rated recruits in Wake's 2021 class is a quarterback from Florida. The quarterback room will be crowded in 2021. And could be even more crowded in 2022 because Wake is actively recruiting quarterbacks for that year.

Bottom line: Clawson is giving reps to his backup quarterbacks without having to worry about game counts this season. Neither one has started a game in college. They need all the experience they can get.

Definitely interesting long and short term thinking going on. I always thought of Kern as the more pocket passer type, while Griffis has more scrambling ability (65 carriers his senior year). Clawson does seem to have a preference for QBs with dual threat abilities. Also this may be better suited for the recruiting thread but Marucci's current stats are 55/97 for 769 yds with 9:2 and 54 carries for 276 yds through 7 games.

It’s been updated. 2029.

If Hartman sticks for all 6 seasons he'll be 24 y/o. Can't speak for the guy obviously and his mind could change several times between now and then, but unless rewriting all the Wake career passing records is a big deal to him, I'd say his odds of staying thru his final year vs. a) taking a shot at the NFL, b)finishing out his career somewhere else just "because" or c) heading into the business/professional world are a toss-up.

Or Hartman goes the distance with WF because the stability at the QB position has the effect of attracting better lineman and better skilled players across his tenure giving him a better platform to develop and showcase his own talent. Coaches get to say to O linemen recruits with a completely straight face that they will be blocking for the best QB in the conference. Coaches may also get to say that about one or more RBs.

ALSO, per Les Johns, "Since the turn of the century, the Demon Deacons boast a record of 30-19 against UNC, NC State and Duke. In addition, during that time, Wake Forest is 44-19 against all in-state opponents." Now that is recruiting ammunition in state!

After six games the Demon Deacons lead the nation in three statistical categories, all of them positive.

The Deacons have not had any passes intercepted this year. 0 (zero) in 172 pass attempts.

The Deacs are tied with Kentucky for most interceptions with 11.

Wake leads in turnover margin at +14.

The Deacs are second to LSU in kickoff return yardage at 36.3. One yard total separates the teams.

Clawson's teams always emphasize TO margin. Interesting that one of his least experienced teams may be one of his best in that stat. Kudos to Sam Hartman. Protecting the football is job #1 for a QB, and no one has been better at that in college football this year.

Absolutely, Sam has been very steady this year. Still holds the ball too long on occasion but has been very careful with the ball and is letting our receivers and backs do the work.

Yeah, I don't understand why he doesn't chuck it out of bounds more often?

given an extra year of eligibility due to COVID, I expect a lot of our best players to become graduate transfers to big time programs, rather than stay at Wake for their 4th or 5th season.

WF is a big time program.
