2020-21 NCAA Men's Basketball Thread - Will the Zags Go Unbeaten?

BC is a complete career killer. Way more so than even we are.

Getting back to FSU, I'd love to see Hamilton get to a final-4 after all these years. He's been doing a solid job there forever and never appears to get his due. His teams have always been athletic and have gotten after you defensively, although occasionally he's had too many masons. Covid ended what could have been a nice run for him last year. I'd like to see him get it this year. Just hope he avoids Baylor's and Gonzaga's regions.

I thought that 2018 FSU team was going to win it all. You could argue that last year's team would have had a shot as well.

The 2018 FSU team worked Gonzaga in the round of 16 to get to the Elite 8, and then lost a tight game to Michigan who played for the Natty. The 2019 FSU team advanced to Sweet 16, but Gonzaga exacted revenge in that round. Both those FSU teams had 3 future NBA players: Kabengele, Terance Mann and Trent Forest (and possibly MJ Walker who played on both of those teams). The 2019 team also had Devin Vassell who has played for the Spurs this year. FSU has the talent stream flowing right now. Kudos to Leonard Hamilton who has gotten better with age.

L'ville, VT, Clemson and BC are all on pause right now because of COVID.

Tonight's Cuse at L'ville game has been postponed/cancelled, which is good for WF because that means the start of the Duke/WF telecast won't be pre-empted by the end of Cuse/L'ville.

VT at FSU and Clemson at Pitt set for this weekend have been postponed/cancelled. Instead, FSU will play at Pitt, which is the makeup of a January 9 game that was postponed.

Here is the ACC press release: https://theacc.com/news/2021/2/17/acc-announces-mens-basketball-schedule-changes.aspx

Also, UNC had its mid-week game against VT cancelled/postponed; so, on Monday, UNC sent out a tweet looking for an opponent, and Northeastern accepted. They are playing right now.

Wake playing the long game this season. Take a huge COVID break at the end of 2020 and sit back as the rest of the ACC falls apart. Win ACC Tourney and automatic bid by default by being the only team in Greensboro.

4D Chess

UVA couldn’t get stops in the last 5 minutes. Uncharacteristic. Hurt is annoying and good.

My friends and I are spending the opening weekend of the Tournament at a sportsbook. I think I'm probably going to lay some large amounts of money on Gonzaga and cross my fingers. I just don't see anyone beating them. Baylor missing so many games down the stretch is not going to do them any good. The Zags are getting their games in, cupcakes admittedly, but playing any type of competitive basketball down the home stretch is better than sitting on your ass getting rusty.

While we were losing by 18 to State, here’s a few other notable scores from Beatdown Saturday
GT beats Miami by 27. 87-60
UNC destroys UL by 45. 99-54
Syracuse outscores ND by 22 in the second half to win 75-67
Kentucky upsets Tennessee 70-55.

Kept watching for our big 2nd half come back home court win..... didn't happen. :tear:

Edit: Well, until switched the channel to watch syr make their big home court win come back....

(with the sound off because DFL was doing the broadcast.)

ACC basketball has sucked the last 2 years.

It's not as if the conference has fallen off a cliff. The ACC is ranked 3rd among all conferences. FSU can beat anyone. Clemson beat the best team in the SEC, Bama. VT beat Villanova. UVA has maybe the best offensive front court in the country; still think that they will make a run in March. Duke and UNC are improving. Georgia Tech is under the radar good (my long shot pick to win the ACCT). Yes, no one in the ACC is on the level of Baylor and Gonzaga, but that doesn't mean the conference sucks. Think the conference will perform better in the NCAAs than people project.

2 years ago, we had 3 #1 seeds. I can't remember 2 straight years where we had such a thin group of decent teams. We have 2 good teams in UVA and VT and 1 very good team, and we have 13 schools. We routinely had double that back in the 80s-90s when we only had 8-9 schools.

I think we might’ve caught Duke at the wrong time. They look legit.

This offseason is going to be the wildest transfer portal year ever. Guess players can't wait until the end of the season, which isn't far off, to get to the front of the transfer line. Johnson is Pitt's 2nd best player, devastating loss for Pitt and a slap in the face to not wait until the season ends. WF does play at Pitt next Tuesday. So, the transfer decision is good for the Deacs.

Johnson is from the DC area, and G'town was a finalist. Would guess that the Hoyas will be in on him.

Also, just saw a tweet that noted that this year's Kansas State team is the first team with a top 10 win (they beat #7 OK last night) and a loss to a D2 team since.... 1993-4 Wake Forest. That WF team lost the opener to D2 Alaska Anchorage in the great Alaska Shootout, and then beat #2 Duke twice, and #5 UNC (WF also lost a brutal game to UNC in the ACC Tournament). WF lost to KS in the NCAAs that year.

The more I think about Xavier Johnson leaving Pitt, the more I don't get the timing.

Unless you are going to the NBA, like Jalen Johnson, it just looks like you are quitting on your team to leave with ~3 weeks left in the season. He's not going to get any extra eligibility by pulling the trigger now. I get that he wants to get his name out there so that he can have more of a choice about where he ends up... But most of the quality programs are still going to be playing for a while (and don't know how their rosters will look for next year).

I think it makes more sense to enter the portal the day after your team's season ends... Or if you play for Wake Forest, after you've met with Forbes 2-3 days after the season ends.

You aren't going to miss anything and you won't look like a quitter.

Yeah the portal is gonna be nuts, and for Wake it's occurring in year 2 of a new coach who hates to lose and is about to finish 2nd or 3rd to last in the ACC. Our 2 best players are first-year transfers, and who knows if DuBose will play another year. We've got Hildreth and McCray coming in plus kinda Whitt after his "pre-freshman" year. I'd label Ody as critical, Mucius maybe a step below him but also a solid piece of a good team. But seriously after that it could be a complete free-for-all. There could be 5+ better options at every position available to play immediately and that didn't just burn a year of eligibility once the dust settles.
