2020-21 NCAA Men's Basketball Thread - Will the Zags Go Unbeaten?

So other than Winthrop, VCU and Loyola, who I'm pulling for, what are some of the non power 5 schools y'all are pulling for and who you think could make a run?

Is Drake going to get an at large bid? If so, EVERYONE loves the Drake.

Drake deserves a bid. They gave Loyola a good game and they've only lost like 3 games all year. I prefer Loyola, but I have no problems with the Drake.

Drake lost their top 2 players late in the season. One of them, Shanquan Hemphill, is expected to return if they get a tournament bid. There are murmurs that some bubble teams, like St. Louis, are looking to schedule games this week against teams who also had an early conference tourney to enhance their resume. So, maybe, St. Louis will play Drake, and the winner gets in.

Linked is a chart ranking each conference by percentage of scheduled regular games played during the year by conference:

https://twitter.com/tayloreldridge/status/1367126114141831168/photo/1

For the season 86% of scheduled D1 games were played, which probably exceeded expectations. Incredibly, one conference, the Missouri Valley, played 100% of their scheduled games: 90 for 90 (but they did have a tournament game cancelled because of positive COVID test with the Northern Iowa). The Colonial Conference played the lowest percentage, as only 57% of their scheduled games actually took place. Among the Power Conferences, the ACC was the worst, playing 122 of the 150 scheduled games (81%; the chart was put together last week before the ACC regular season ended).

Power Conference %:

Big 10: 136 out of 140 -- 97%
Pac 12: 116 out of 120 -- 96%
Big 12: 85 out of 90 -- 94%
SEC: 116 out of 126 -- 92%
Big East: 96 out of 110 -- 87%
ACC: 122 out of 150 -- 81%

Did seem like the ACC was not aggressive about rescheduling games after they were postponed. The Big 10 was particularly diligent about rescheduling games as Michigan State and Michigan both played 3 games a week to end the season.

Also, to close the loop on a topic from earlier this year... Home teams won 80 of 121 ACC games this season (66.1%).

Highest % since 2016-17.

So the lack of fans did not impact home court advantage... At least not in a measurable way.

UNCG and the fighting Wes Millers play Mercer tonight for the SoCon title. UNCG started slow, but they have gained momentum during the year. UNCG won its 20th game last night (5th year in a row with 20 wins for the Spartans under Miller; UNCG had 3 20 win seasons in its history before Miller). UNCG has an absolute stud at PG in Isaiah Miller; SOCON POY and Defensive POY; this is back to back SoCon POY's for him -- last player to do that? Steph Curry; Miller has also won the conference defensive POY 3 years in a row. Isaiah Miller is a senior, but is eligible to play next year. Not sure what his plans are for next year, but if Isaiah Miller enters the transfer portal almost every Power Conference school would be after him.

Our commonwealth's teams have had more than their fair share of covid infections and cancellations. The odd thing is VA state totals aren't nearly as bad as states like FL, GA, NC, SC, IN, NY and PA, but it feels like our sports teams are leading the way in cancellations. UVA women ended up cancelling its season after a couple games.

Was looking at Isaiah Miller's stats the other day. To say he dominates the ball would be an understatement. I've never seen him play, but not sure why he's considered a stud. Maybe on defense.

100.8 ORtg... #2 in %Poss & #4 in %Shots
10-46 from 3 (.217); 65-98 from the line (66.3%)
So basically, he takes a TON of shots (35.5% of his team's shots)... But isn't a 3 point shooter.

How Wes Miller has been able to win games with that as his offense is amazing to me. They have no real plus outside shooters on the entire roster.

Not saying you were comparing him to Steph Curry... But he's not Steph Curry.

For comparison, Stephen Curry took 38.3% of his team's shots, but was 130-336 from 3 (38.7%) and 220-251 (87.6%) from the line. Shot 44% from 3 on more attempts as a Sophomore.

ORtg of 117.8.

He also had a ton more assists.

Lack of perimeter shooting is UNCG's (and Isaiah Miller's) weakness. At this point in college hoop, almost everything is about shooting the 3, and Isaiah Miller is not a threat from behind the arc. So, that is why his numbers don't look overwhelming.

Miller does everything else well. There are over 4,000 college basketball players. Miller has been 2nd, 3rd and 3rd in steals per defensive possession in the country over the last 3 years. For the season, Miller averages 19 ppg, 7 rpg (at 6 feet tall), 4 apg and 3 spg. As WF has learned this season, it's really important to have a guy who the opponent can't keep from going to the basket. Miller gets to the basket.

Along these lines, the highest he shot on threes in four years is 28.2% and has a mediocre 1.2 ATO ratio for four years. He's never averaged 4 apg. He could be a decent 8th/9th man on a good team.

If we believe Carter Whitt is our PG for the next 3-4 years, he has to play. If Miller comes to Wake, Whitt play far less.

App State has survived two OT games in a row to make it to the Sun Belt championship game tonight.

Had no idea the Miller guy from UNCG was a point guard and only 6 feet. Seems all the local news shows here are his extremely high flying dunks and alley oops...and he is on the receiving end. There were 2 from their conference tournament on tonight. Thought sure he must be in 6 “4” of 6 “5” range.

uncg in a see saw battle with 7 seed mercer late in the socon championship.

App and uncg going dancing. Glad the teams around us are having fun in March.

Also Elon advanced to the CAA finals; they play for a bid tomorrow. Big night for NC schools.
