2020-21 Fantasy NBA League thread - Congratulations to MDMH!

Four weeks until the playoffs. Top 8 seeds advance.

There are three tiers in the playoff race:

Top tier: Baggy Maggums (Embiid, Tatum) and Cody Z Baldspots (Steph, Beal) have a strong hold on the top of the league. They meet in Week 16 in what could determine the #1 seed.

Second tier: Greggg Popacapabish (Vucevic, Harden, LaVine) is 9 GB and holding on to 3rd. Giannis Aneedtocrapo (Holmes, Rozier) is 11 GB with a ton of guys ranked outside of the preseason top 100. Beal or No Beal (Jokic, Murray) is a little further back at 16 GB. Beal or No Beal beat Greggg Popacapabish 6-2, so this group is very much up for grabs. Beal or No Beal faces Giannis Aneedtocrapo in Week 16. All three of these teams should make the playoffs.

Bubble: Four teams are within 2 games of the last 3 playoff spots. None of these teams are likely to break into the Top 5 absent a huge collapse at the top. Ph's Spurs Donks (Luka, Mitchell) is 23 GB and D14 (VanVleet, Butler) is 23.5 GB. Ph and D14 have a key match up this week that should give the winner a playoff edge. Both teams have made the most move this season, so this could be a chess match.

Bam-ItsDameTime-isle (Dame, CP3) is 25 GB. isle has a tough matchup against #1 Baggy Magnums this week. He finishes with Ph and Popacapabish.

Medium Baller Brand (Kawhi, T. Harris) is 25 GB and coming off a tough 2-7 loss to Ph. He faces Popacapabish, Beal or No Beal, and D14 the next three weeks.

Bottom Tier: Three teams still have a shot at the playoffs but need to come through big the next few weeks. Paint Touches (Lebron, Sabonis) is 28 GB and within reach of the Bubble, but has Aneedtocrapo and Baggy Magnums the next two weeks.

Hermits United (Collins, Suns Bridges) is 33.5 GB. Hermits should pick up some steam with a win over Googling Fournier but has huge games against isle and Paint Touches before facing #2 Cody Z in the last week.

Googling Fournier (which I finally did after Fournier tweeted about it) is a dead team starting LaMelo and SGA with CJ on IL.

I still have no idea which posters are which teams for like half the teams.

Honestly making the most transactions in the league to finish middle of the pack sounds about right for me though. Whoever dropped Anthony Edwards a month and a half ago I do appreciate it.

I have no idea who dropped Kuzma while Lebron and AD are out. I am grateful. Welcome home to my last pick of the draft.

I try to max out my moves even if it’s just filling an IL spot on Sunday night.

I also figured after playing a season I would have a better grasp of how to prioritize things while drafting, but the only thing I've really learned is to not draft KAT in the first round one spot ahead of Curry

I've added/dropped Kuzma like 10 times this season. He kept tanking me in FG% and Deandre Hunter was off the IL is the most recent reason I dropped him

I definitely agree with Ph's idea that the number of games each week should be capped

I rarely have to make any decisions about who to play on a given night or what to prioritize among my own team

only have to make those decisions in the add/drop market, which are fringe guys and specialists anyways

Yeah. Roster management is more about maxing out games rather than choosing matchups or whatever.

It’s also way easier to maximize games through add/drop if you have a shitty bench anyways. If you like enough of the guys on your bench that you don’t want to drop them, you really can’t maximize games.

2020-21 Fantasy NBA League thread - Week 14 - Trade Deadline extended to April 9

Yep.

Max games is the best way to even things up and add more “coaching” to the game. We’d be more free to add and hold guys who aren’t producing because we wouldn’t have to play them. Just can’t do that now.

The only way to restrict games is go down from 10 to 8 active spots and that would suck on nights where 10+ guys are active and Thursday nights where we’d be forced to play a lesser guy who is active.

I’d be all for 35 max games.

It just depends on what kind of league you want to have. One that has a way less active waiver wire/trade market might be better with max games, because that would heighten the importance of nailing the top of the draft. I personally prefer playing fantasy that has active adds/trades from everybody, which in that case I think max games would hinder things.

I think people would be more into trades etc if it was that much more important to quality over quantity.

That may be true. I’ve been hesitant on trades because more so because there’s just so many factors. If a trade improves me on points and assists but I lose out on rebounds, FG%, and blocks do I do it?

Not saying I’m against the max games idea, I just typically don’t like fantasy concepts that make it easier for whoever “won” the draft to win the league. If the fringe guys on the roster aren’t even getting games then it feels like that would be the case.

Yeah. That's a fair point. I do think "winning" the draft should be the main thing though. If someone picks 12 guys who manage to be good throughout the entire season, that's huge. One reason I didn't propose any trades is because I didn't want to sell the young players on my roster before they got going.

I think if Yahoo let you customize more, I'd recommend:

- cap games
- fewer gamed roster spots
- bigger bench
- more of the IL+ spots than true IL given how they have such arbitrary IL designations

If Yahoo has IL+ next year, I'd just do 3 IL+ spots and no IL spots.

By fewer gamed roster spots do you mean getting rid of Util or using one C or something like that?

I think 3 bench spots is fine because it helps keep an active waiver wire.

Anybody want to make a trade? My team does well in 3PTM, AST, STL and poorly in FG%, REB, BLK (goddamn Thomas Bryant's achilles). So I'd sell from my depth of guards (Vanvleet, Lowry, Derrick White, Seth Curry) for a F/C of equivalent value. I would just send out offers but I have no idea who is actually interested in making a deal.

yes to your definition of gamed roster spots

I don't think an active waiver wire is necessarily a good thing -- I think there should be more strategy in how you build your roster and an active waiver waiver wire is a symptom of the no game caps and not a good thing in and of itself -- I think the active waiver wire is why we don't see any trades

Offer everyone. First come, first serve.

I'm enjoying the chess match with D14 this week. Tied 4-4 and most stats are pretty close.

I picked up Luke Kennard for Tuesday after PG was announced out. Then D14 picked up Shake Milton. Last night, I brought Gary Trent, Jr back to the Donks and he got his career high. D14 had a good night with Maledon.

I thought about making some moves, but I want to see how injuries shake out. Luka, Wall, and Mitchell have missed games so I'm low on assists.

And we've got Hawks-Spurs tonight.
