2021 Wake Forest Football Season

I think the Ole Miss team we beat, beat Tebow's Florida team that same season.

Even more amazing is that we beat the VT team who beat the eventual national championship tOSU team in Columbus, in the 6-3 2OT thriller in 2014. beamer.gif

Sucks we haven't been to pair a defense like that with the strong Clawfenses.

after Ole Miss beat UF Tebow gave the infamous apology that I think is now on a plaque at their stadium

Yeah, but defense wins games like the UNC game last year. If we had a defense on the field the last 20 minutes of that game we win going away. At some point, you've got to stop somebody.

The final score of that game was 59-53 and you're pointing to the defense ? Seriously ? We lost that game because our offense didn't score on five straight possessions in the second half when we had the lead.

3 and out
3 and out
5 and out

4 Downs

Yeah and one stop, one stop in the last 20-25 minutes of that game and we win. We score 53 and you think it was all on the offense, lol:bowrofl:

No one is saying it was all on the offense. But 3-4 first downs in 5 drives would have probably also won the game. For an elite offense, that should be a piece of cake. Elite offenses can much more easily overcome poor defenses than vice versa.

You score 53 points against the UNC-CH defense then can't get a first down for a quarter and a half to win the game ? You have to keep scoring or at least hold onto the ball.

The Wake defense had given up 24 points in the first half alone before the offense shut down.

No, that is exactly what he was saying.

Even if that were exactly what I was saying (it's not), you'd still be wrong to blame the defense. They got gassed when the offense was running one minute off the clock per possession and would up giving up five more points in the second half than they did in the first half. This was an offensive contest.

Looking for a way to make home games against Old Dominion, Norfolk State, Florida State, Louisville, Duke, and NC State appear interesting ? Drink a bunch of Deacon Brew !

No truth to the rumor that the beer is made with actual relic Deacon fan tears from March 19, 2005.

That is exactly what you said, it's word for word. "We lost that game because our offense didn't score on five straight possessions in the second half when we had the lead."

We lost that game for that reason and also our defense couldn't get a stop. Sure it was an offensive contest, but you've got to be able to stop somebody sometime. It's no coincidence that the 2 dominant teams the last 10 years have been Alabama and Clemson and both traditionally field good defenses. Hell, Bama has won natty's during the offensive era with very pedestrian offenses. It's only recently they've started fielding potent offenses. Offense and defense let us down in the 2nd half of that game.

It’s also a lot harder on the defense when they’re constantly on the field.

Update on the current location of former Deacs/coaches:

Chris Barclay: RB Coach Purdue
Josh Gattis: OC Michigan (big year for him; if Big Blue offense struggles again, he will be gone)
Brad White: DC Kentucky
Warren Belin: LB Coach Howard

Brad Lambert: DC Purdue (1st year)
Dean Hood: HC (Murray State)
Clark Lea: HC Vandy
Mike Elko: DC (Texas A&M)
Steve Russ: LB Coach Washington Football Team
Adam Scheier: Rutgers Special Teams Coach (Rutgers had the one of the top special teams in the nation last year)
Tim Duffie DB Coach OK State
Ray McCartney: DL Davidson
Derrick Jackson: DC Northern Illinois

Elrod's conspirators:

Lonnie Galloway Assistant HC and WR Coach UNC
Jay Bateman DC UNC

Grobe assistants still on Calhoun's staff at AF:

Lobo: OL Coach
Brian Knorr: LB Coach
Jonathan Himebach TE Coach

Clawson's retention rate for his coaching staff is off the charts as the following coaches were hired with Clawson back in 2013-4:

OC Warren Ruggiero
WF/Assistant HC Kevin Higgins
DL Dave Cohen
RB John Hunter
OL Nick Tabacca

DC Lyle Hemphill: 5th season on the staff
Special Teams Coordinator: 5th season on the staff
LB Coach Greg Jones 6th season staff; 2nd as LB coach
CB Paul Williams: 2nd season on staff

The two big losses from Clawson's staff are Clark Lea and Mike Elko. Defense hasn't been the same since they left. I wonder if Clawson offered the DC job to Clark Lea after Elko left or if they were a package deal to ND.

Need to add Ray McCartney and former VaTech coach Shane Beamer onto the list of Elrod co-conspirators.
