Nice recognition for Bates....

The Bengals toiled in obscurity for much of the season, particularly after rookie quarterback Joe Burrow went down for the year. Still, Jessie Bates III was one of the best players in the entire league at any position. Bates recorded three picks and 12 pass breakups, an absurd volume of plays on the football for a player patrolling the deep middle the way Bates has for most of this season. Only missed tackles chipped away at a grade that would otherwise have been head and shoulders higher than any other safety.

Way to go, Jessie!
Great news and recognition.

WF has had one football alum named AP all-pro: Bill George, 8 times.

So if Bates is also named AP all-pro, he’ll join a very short list.

Bates was among the lowest rated recruits in our 2015 recruiting class (not ranked in the top 1000 HS players; #124 safety; #25 player in Indiana).

FWIW, WF's top 4 rated recruits in the 2015 class were:

1. QB Austin Kerns #528
2. CB Dionte Austin #530
3. TE Bowman Archibald #534
4. RB Rocky Reid #569

The WF recruits from that 2015 class that have received NFL paychecks are:

1. Scotty Washington #774
2. Kendall Hinton #821
3. Nathan Gilliam #836
4. Justin Strnad Not in the top 1000
5. Jesse Bates Not in the top 1000
6. Alex Bachman Not in the top 1000

Reviewing recruiting rankings in retrospect confirms that those doing the rankings have no clue after the top 250-300.

was pretty surprised Bates didn't get a Pro Bowl invite

wonder how many guys make AP All-Pro team without getting invited to the Pro Bowl

Bates named Second Team All-Pro

Bates is a bargain right now. When he was drafted, Bates signed a 4 year $4.9 million contract. Next year, in the last year of that deal, Bates will make $1,154,702. Not much for one of the best safeties in the sport.

The good news for Jesse is that he will be an unrestricted FA after next season. If the Bengals are smart (and they often are not), this off-season, they will offer Bates a multi-year deal with substantial guaranteed money. FWIW, a top 5 safety in the NFL makes about $14 million a year. So, for the Bengals to lock up Jesse, they need to offer him something like 4 years for $56-60 million. Bengals have a ton of cap room.

Good info. Congrats to Bates.

To give an idea of how inaccurate recruiting rankings are, a player not rated in the top 1000 in his HS class translates to a player that would not be drafted by the NFL if there was a 30 round draft each year, instead of a 7 round draft. Three years after graduating from HS, Bates was a 2nd round pick. The point is don't get worked up because BC's or Pitt's recruiting class is rated higher than WF class because those schools have more guys rated #301 to #600, while WF has more recruits rated #601 to #1000 (or higher). The recruiting rankings just have no basis to judge players who aren't obviously elite.
