2021 Republican Coup (Practice Run)

McCarthy has resorted to the bkf defense I see - it's really Democrats who are responsible for all this by nominating Hillary, which left tens of millions with no choice at all but to vote for Trump, and that's led to this disaster. Trump voters and supporters are really blameless in all this, because the Democrats really forced them to back Trump.

We need to investigate Muriel Bowser’s role in this travesty!

Unfortunately Republicans like McCarthy have learned that a large chunk of their base are as dumb, ignorant, and gullible as hell. Look at how many of them went to DC and stormed the Capitol to support McCarthy and Trump and other Republican's utterly fake charges of vote fraud and stealing the election. Or the polls that show a large percentage of Republicans do believe the election was stolen, or still want Trump to be the GOP candidate in 2024, or won't take the covid vaccines because they trust Dear Leader and conspiracy websites that tell them that covid is fake and/or that the vaccine is actually the Deep State's covert way of tracking everybody's movements.

BS outrage like this (and of course it wasn't Pelosi or Schumer or Democrats who treated troops like this) is a desperate GOP attempt to change the narrative away from the attack on the Capitol - which I do think has significantly hurt Republicans with the general public - to something that will force Democrats on the defensive. And they won't stop either.

Have we talked compared the 22 year old white woman who stole Nancy Pelosi who was given an ankle bracelet and released to her mom to Khalif Browder who at 16 year old was sent to Rikers for stealing a bookbag (which he did not do)?

It's hard to blame them for fighting for white supremacy. It's clearly worth it with little downside. No harm, no foul. If this isn't punished, I doubt we'll have a democracy within the next few decades.

Article actually doesn't make it sound as bad as the headline, more that prosecutors are weighing options in light of the uncertainty of the justice system.

Nevertheless, these people said, some in federal law enforcement are concerned that charging people solely with unlawful entry, when they are not known to have committed any other bad acts, could lead to losses if they go to trial.“If an old man says all he did was walk in and no one tried to stop him, and he walked out and no one tried to stop him, and that’s all we know about what he did, that’s a case we may not win,” one official said.

Another official noted most of those arrested so far have no criminal records.

Meanwhile, defense lawyers for some of those charged are contemplating something akin to a “Trump defense” — that the president or other authority figures gave them permission or invited them to commit an otherwise illegal act. Such a defense might not forestall charges but could be effective at trial or sentencing.
...
Prosecutors have other options. For rioters with no previous criminal records or convictions and whose known behavior inside the Capitol was not violent or destructive, the government could enter into deferred plea agreements, a diversion program akin to pretrial probation in which prosecutors agree to drop charges if a defendant commits no offenses over a certain time period.

Don't get me wrong, I'm highly skeptical that this same discussion would be had for a crowd of POC. And if they let people off solely out of practical concerns (like swamping the courts), just end the nation now.

We can't let these people escape justice. If Trump wanted to flood the courts, the only answer is to expand every level of the federal judiciary so we can handle the influx.

To make it fair, we'll let the sitting president nominate people and the senate can decide whether to have a vote on these candidates or not.
