How to convert conservatives

Pretty sure shock therapy is the prescribed conversion method for "undesirable conditions."

Now that he doesn't have a job, maybe Pence can start a "pray the conservatives away" plan.

Take a listen to the 2008 phone call posted over on the sports board. A testament to the above.

It us part of the 2020 college football thread. Post #2264.

Here is another story similar to Jay from Huntsville - a black musician befriends a KKK leader
https://www.ted.com/talks/daryl_davis_why_i_as_a_black_man_attend_kkk_rallies?language=en

Another example would be the movie American History X, where Ed Norton is a Neo Nazi jailed for the murder of a black man but whose cell mate is a black man. Due to proximity, they become friends. Ed's former life is a secret for a long time until....

I think one of the lessons for reconciliation we can take from the caller, the Ted talk, and movie is social association. Be around each other. Become friends. Empathy flows from the familiar instead of the hypothetical. This advice also came from a book One Blood I read over the summer.

So how should one go about doing it? I suspect calling them idiot rubes is not an effective strategy. If we're actually going to progress as a society, someone's going to have to figure out how to do so.... so how do we do it?

Your suspicions on name calling are correct. Is this person you have in mind a Christian? I am gathering my thoughts and will attempt a meaningful reply later.

so i have this friend of mine, super conservative, and we can discuss politics a lot. neither of us get mad or anything but i continuously have to tell him to diversify his information intake to understand the real stories. during our conversations he continuously asks me to "look it up and show me" because he doesn't believe anything Fox doesn't say.

people have to scrutinize the information they hear and diversify, just like their investment portfolios. if people are unwilling to do this simple thing, you will never be able to help them.

I find that cryptic, snarky, passive aggressive Facebook posts are super effective

Honest question. You have presumably provided him a... few... examples of the dishonesty of fox news. At what point does he begin questioning what they are saying?

I think we need to seriously reevaluate what is covered by the first amendment and what news sources like OAN, Newsmax, and to a lesser extent Fox News can call “news”.

Tucker Carlson and his ilk should be personally accountable for disseminating demonstrably false information under the cover of “news”.

Don Lemon and CNN are no better my friend. Just depends on which side you are on.

Totally wrong! You may not like Lemon, but he doesn't and promote hate like Carlson, Hannity, Ingraham and other Fox News liars.

Don Lemon has a fraction of the notoriety and a fraction the air time that Carleson, Hannity, and Pirro have.

Common sense is effective in building a dialogue.
Respect if provided is generally returned.
Listen twice as much as speak. Two ears, one mouth.

I'm not warak, but I have a conservative friend on Facebook who posts all the conspiracy theories. I debunk them as much as possible with right wing links. I used a Newsmax link today with no success. Once the lie has taken root, there is not much we can do.

First we must all become singleminded, white, Christians with khakis, new balance sneakers, suburban dream living, American food only, occasional anniversary dinner at Applebee’s. No more isms

Wait did this mother fucker just tweet that multiculturalism is not-American. Dafuq? Has he ever open a U.S. history textbook in his life.

Multiculturalism and assimilation is one of the few things were actually good at.

Forget this rube, just feed him burgers and hope he dies soon of cardiac arrest. He's past fixing.

But to seriously answer the OP, you can't. At least the ones that are 25-30+. You just have to hope the kids of these Qanon white supremacists attend schools and community organizations that expose them a variety of viewpoints. I'm trying to do my part as an educator. Today was our last day of the first semester so I had my students complete an EOC Feedback form, and I was really humbled to hear a number my students thank me for discussing issues of race and inequality; including Confederates Statues, BLM and our nation's crippling history of white supremacism. Several said that they had never examined those issues from a historical perspective, and I teach at all-minority public school.

I've also tried in earnest for the last year to convince my retired elementary school mother who has become a FoxNews addict in her retirement, to not vote for Trump and I failed. She thinks all other news is fake news, that Biden is an Antifa puppet, and that socialist (lol) Kamala Harris (notice the POC is the true villain) will seize power by forcing Joe out and take away all of our freedoms. And she's a pretty tame "conservative". She has softened a lot of social issues over the years, is pro-LGBTQ now and at least claims to want equality for all people.

Now my uneducated rube family members are completely gone if their social media is to be believed. They think it is the end days now that Trump lost, their racism is no longer thinly veiled, and the support the "message", if not the actions, of the terrorists who stormed the Capitol. Lastly the two people I'm in contact with that are diagnosed with severe mental illness have both aggressively slid into the conspiracy theory Qanon alternate realty. It would not have surprised me at all to find out that they were in DC on 1/6 (they weren't, I don't think).

That he is the Secretary of State representing a multicultural, increasingly diverse society which he condemns - when it is actually one of our best selling points in world affairs and to promote a positive view of America abroad - pretty much says it all about the bigotry, ignorance, and just plain blind blowhard idiocy of this administration. It's like we've had a bunch of Archie Bunkers in public office for four years. Noon tomorrow really can't come soon enough.
