2021 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

Sean Miller fired at Arizona.

Arizona-related possibilities: Stoudamire (Pacific), Simon (Lakers Asst), Pastner (GT)

But there are plenty of "outside the family" options... It's a high profile job, for sure.

They should hire Josh Pastner and Wes Miller can take GT.

Pastner would be the logical choice (and it would be a good time to move on as GT peaked this season), but guessing that Arizona will feel the need to hire someone without an NCAA infraction taint, and Pastner doesn't pass that test.

Maybe not, but Pastner may just leave you an interesting voicemail.

Didn't Stoudamire get busted for taking pot through TSA when he was on the Jailblazers?

Gary McKnight, Mater Dei, would have two former players coaching in the PAC12 if Simon gets the job. He seemed to be a nice guy the couple of times he played at the park. He was an assistant at AZ.

AZ candidates according to their "insider":

Former players/managers"

- Pastner
- Stoudamire
- Luke Walton
- Jason Terry
- Miles Simon

Outside the program:

- Mark Pope (BYU)
- Tommy Lloyd (Gonzaga's top assistant; apparently, he's a wizard at finding international talent)
- Eric Musselman (Ark)
- Beilein
- Kelvin Sampson
- Mike White
- Brian Dutcher (San Diego State)

Yeah, I don't think they'll really hire Pastner. But I definitely think Pastner would be interested.

No idea what happens here.

Would be so funny if Musselman left Arkansas already.

Funny, but not at all surprising.

Interesting that Kelvin Sampson is on that list. He has cheated at every stop he has been at.

As a Arizona fan, I hate this fire. The timing makes zero sense. Why keep him this whole season and fire him afterwards when they had already banned themselves to make the postseason anyway?

People on the Arizona board want Musselman. Bet they'll end up with Pastner or Tommy Lloyd (longtime Gonzaga asst) who are both a significant step down from Miller IMO.

Luke would be an interesting choice, but he's making a bit over $6M. I think this is his last guaranteed year.

Looks like Pitt now has an obvious replacement choice when Capel gets canned.

It's been a rough couple of weeks for the Miller family. Not really when you consider their buy-outs.

Dude, the Arizona AD budget is in shambles. They couldn't really afford to fire Kevin Sumlin but couldn't afford not to after they went 0-5 and got blown out by Arizona State. Firing Miller and hiring a new guy is going to leave them bankrupt if somebody isn't stepping up to fund that otherwise sinkng ship.

Seems like every school has a couple of internet moguls that killed it during the pandemic and have money to burn. IU found one alum with $10 million burning a hole in his/her pocket, and he/she alone took care of the Archie Miller buyout. Also, Arizona has been building their case to fire Sean Miller for cause for 3 years. Doubt the Wildcats will need to pay 100% of the cost of the buyout. Sumlin was fired for being a crappy coach. When that is the ground, schools generally have to pay the full buyout.
