2021 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

Good for Wes- Cincy is a good job with a nice basketball history. Win there and then yes, he will be ready for an ACC job.

A previous coach at UC was under some pressure from fans to do better. He got fed up with it and UCLA hired him. So if he wins at UC, he will be ready for the top jobs in the ACC, not just a job in the ACC.

Yeah, Cincy has been better than Wake Forest every single year for the last 11 years. That is the entire span of any potential recruit's lifetime (in terms of remembering college basketball).

9 NCAA tourneys vs. 1*

Cincy has a better basketball history than Wake, not just over the last 11 years but over the last 60+ years.

Agreed.

Went back all the way from the 96-97 season (currently the first in KP), and Cincy has been objectively better than Wake in 17 of 25 seasons (including each of the last 11).

Program Rank: Cincy #32, Wake #61

Wes got himself a better job than the Wake Forest gig. Hate to say it, but right now it is.

Cincy has been to the NCAAs 9 times since 2011. WF once. Also, Cincy has a rich NCAA history with two National Titles and six final fours. Bearcats also have a strong following in the City; they draw fans. So, from those angles, yes, Cincy is far better than WF.

That said, they got screwed in the conference shuffle. Playing in the American Athletic Conference sucks, and that conference took a big hit in hoop when UCONN bailed. Houston had a big 2021 season, and Memphis has a some hoop history and a following, but outside of those other two schools and maybe Temple (which Villanova left in the dust), the AAC is a basketball no-mans land. ECU, Tulane, USF don't even really try to compete in basketball. UCF, SMU and Tulsa are have really low ceilings in basketball. Greg Marshall made Wichita State a name, but guessing that program backslides. Programs in the AAC will always struggle to get the revenue and attention that the other Power Conferences have. How many times did anyone watch (or was even aware of) Houston basketball this year before the tournament? That conference just gets no attention, and very limited revenue from TV. Cash is always king.

Could be wrong, but would guess that Wes wishes he was coaching WF basketball, and Forbes would never trade the WF job for the Cincy job. Will be interesting to see where each program is in 4-5 years. Happy to have DR drag this assessment back out when Miller takes the Bearcats to the Final 4 in 2025, and WF is still playing in ACC Tourney Tuesday.

So, in summary, Cincy has a better basketball history, both old and more recent, than Wake but being in the ACC is way better than being in the AAC

If Cincy has a bunch of built in financial incentives for Miller they will lose a ton with all the championships and Coach of the year awards he is going to win.

ATS, love ya but couldn't about 100-150 teams say that?

Cincinnati has better history but their roster is a disaster right now, just as Wake’s was when Forbes took over. And they have less money, and I believe worse facilities.

Cincinnati was a better job two years ago than it is now. I mean how relevant is what Huggins and even Cronin did when Brannon left a dumpster fire? At the end of the day ACC>AAC, especially when the comparison is between two basketball first programs.

I doubt there are that many that could say they were better each of the last 11 years. Maybe like 30? Complete guess. We did make one NCAA Tourney... That year would eliminate a lot of teams.

But overall? Yeah... At least 100.

They closed their on-campus arena down for a year recently and completely re-did it. I don't know what their weight room looks like. It's also a more urban campus with a bigger student population and basically no academic requirements, which may appeal to some athletes.

Looks like Danny is signing on as an assistant coach under Mark Turgeon at Maryland. Maryland reaction is all over the map. Many apparently wanted a former Maryland player, Duane Simpkins. Others trash this as a "crony hire."

MD will be a pre-season top 20 team next year, maybe top 10.

Reading about Cincy reminded how damn good Oscar Robertson was.

3 years
Averaged 33.8 points per game.
15 rebounds.
7 assists.
Shot 53% from the field as a guard.

Crazy good.

Cincinnati with its greatest player of all time, two final fours. Wake Forest with its greatest player of all time, 2 ACC championships that most fans associate with another player.

ACC>AAC for sure, but I'm not so sure about WFU>Cincinnati.
