2021 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

Think any part of Forbes regrets not waiting another year to move up with all these big jobs opening?

Are you asking if Forbes would prefer to put his name in for over a dozen jobs and compete against most of the coaching establishment vs. applying for one job, driving for an hour to meet with the AD who he already knew before, and then getting the job?

I think the point is that if we didn't make a move last year, we probably wouldn't have landed Forbes this year.

I doubt Forbes regrets anything... But there are certainly some "easier" jobs available this year that don't require this complete rebuild.

Crazy carousel this year... And it is just getting started.

He was asking from Forbes' perspective, not Wake's perspective. I don't think either side regrets anything. Last year was much easier for Forbes than this year would be. Wake would be a major rebuild this year anyway with Sarr and Brown graduating.

This is still going to be a weird hiring cycle. Coaches aren't going to be hanging out at the bars at the Final Four. Lots of meetings over Zoom. There are just far more jobs and far more competition.

Once again, credit to Currie for getting it done last year. Might as well have one of our rebuild years be a Covid year.

I think the agonizing block and last second shot against Notre Dame will be Steve Forbes’ rock-bottom. Sunnier skies from here, as evinced by yesterday’s portal news.

Given our pedigree and what we’re capable of, no coach should regret coming here. Just because the program hired a couple of losers doesn’t mean the program is a loser.

“We’re going to be good again.”

Preach

Listening to SC sports talk last night and it sounds like USC AD Ray Tanner is willing to give Frank Martin a few days to explore other coaching opportunities. Martin has expressed interest in of all things the DePaul job. Tanner is said to have agreed to give him a few days to explore that job but in the event that he doesn't get it, the university will discuss buyout talks. Martin is owed 6.5 mil in the 2 years remaining on his contract.

This may be where Wes Miller gets his start at the next level.

Or SC may go to in state Kelsey?

Damn Straight!..

sounds like South Carolina is going to make a run at Mike Boynton at Oklahoma State who is a Gamecock alum. Then Kelsey and Miller would probably be next in line.

I would rather have Kelsey or Miller honestly

You have to think Matta is glad he didn't have a meeting of the minds with Currie. He should have his pick of jobs this year.

Makes sense that DePaul would move on from 1 abusive asshole in favor of another.

DePaul has sucked for so long, one NCAA appearance in 20 years, that the Blue Demon Program is fairly labeled a career killer job. That said, would think that they would try to find a better candidate than Frank Martin. Martin has coached SC for 9 seasons. They have one NCAA appearance during that time, admittedly it was spectacular with a shocking Final 4 run, but overall that program has been a non-factor for a long time. The Gamecock program is going nowhere under Martin as they are going to suck again next year. Would rather take a chance with a younger mid-major coach than hope that the stars align for Martin again at DePaul. That said, hiring Martin would be consistent with DePaul's previously poor coaching hires.

Yep. They had that good run during Ray Meyers last years there (an Elite Eight, Final Four, Sweet 16, #1 Seed in '80, '81, '82, '84) but they haven't made the Sweet Sixteen since 1987.

Good lord if you were wanting to stay in the family, just hire BJ Mackie and give him a shot.

with all the talent in the area, DePaul is one good coach away from being good, especially now that they have a downtown arena and don't play out in Rosemont

there's nothing Loyola has that should make them any better than DePaul

When I was a kid and just becoming a serious sports fanatic who would comb over the sports pages each day, DePaul was my gold standard of a great basketball program. They were always ranked in the top 5 but rarely on tv which made them elusively mysterious and enticing to my young mind
