72 year old Leonard Hamilton agreed to a 5-year contract extension.

FSU hired Hamilton at 53 years old after 4 seasons at OK State, 10 seasons at Miami and one season with the Wizards. Next year will be his 20th at FSU.

It took him awhile, but Hamilton has figured it out. The names change, but FSU is the same every year: big, athletic and selfless. Unlike Duke and UNC, FSU has been able to recruit both the one and done guys (Scottie Barnes, Jonathan Isaac, Patrick Williams), and the guys that stay for four productive years (MJ Walker, Terrence Mann, Trent Forest). It's not easy to blend a roster of players with different agendas, but he gets his players to give up personal stats for team success. Kudos.

Yeah. That’s a good summary. He’s been a top 2 coach in the conference for several years now.

One other thing about Hamilton and FSU. They are patient.

They will redshirt players and they become productive after being groomed over multiple seasons. On this year's roster, Raiquan Gray, Anthony Polite, Malik Osborne, Wyatt Wilkes, all 4 are major contributors, have redshirted at FSU. Wisconsin is the only other Power program that successfully redshirts. Other coaches and programs (fans) are so impatient, that if a guy doesn't contribute right away they are reflexively move on to the next recruit. Only a super small percentage of players go to the NBA. Obviously, players are going to be better at 22 than 18, which means a recruit who might be rated 150 to 250 recruit coming out of HS, and who are worthless on the ACC level as freshmen, are ready to play at that level after two or three years in a solid program.

Bennett, Boeheim, Roy, K... who's your other top 2? Bennett I assume?

Bennett and Hamilton have been better than K, Roy, and Boeheim for a few years now.

When FSU hired Hamilton I felt they had struck gold and 20 years on it has been proven. Shows if you make the right hire and let them run their program the right way success can follow.

My statement to Ph’s post didn’t come through. Said when FSU hired Hamilton I strongly felt they had gotten their man. 20 years on and it seems they really did.

Long way to go in this season but there's a lot of chatter in the Hoosier state about whether Archie Miller survives if he doesn't make the tournament. He missed it the first two years, was likely in as a double digit seed last year before the cancellation, and has his team 9-7 this year. On top of that Miller is now 0-6 against Purdue.

Things are grim in Bloomington. IU is now 12-12 and losers of 4 of their last 5. If IU misses the tournament (which as we know is to be played in Indiana and in part in Assembly Hall), it becomes very difficult to see how Archie survives. Have to figure that Archie needs to win at MSU and at Purdue to close the regular season, and perhaps win one in the conference tournament, to sneak into the tournament.

IU's best (and only solid) guard, Armann Franklin is out for the rest of the regular season, and maybe the year. After at Sparty tonight, IU plays at Purdue this weekend, and Matt Painter has owned IU (which is part of the problem for Miller). Looking like a 12-14 season for the Hoosiers heading into the Big 10 Tourney. For decades, IU was the premier Big 10 program, then MSU passed IU: at this point, everyone in the conference outside of Nebraska, Penn State, NW and Minnesota is now ahead of IU, and the gap is widening.

Given that Indiana (possibly Illinois) is the only state in the Big 10 footprint, where basketball is the priority sport over football, got to be maddening to the Hoosier fanbase that IU program has continued to stumble along. Consider this, WF has been to the NCAAs more recently than Indiana.

I'm sure there will be more movement in P6 than last year (only Wake). What may be interesting is to see how much the new coaches get paid. Further, will some have more ramping of pay due to uncertainty of revenues?

For Power 6 schools, athletic departments don't pay the 6 figure salaries of football and basketball coaches. Big time boosters do. There are a lot of rich people that have only gotten richer over the last year. So, if IU wanted to make a run at a big name, the athletic department wouldn't paying the Miller buyout and the new coach's salary will be paid by a some hedge fund or IT mogul with IU connections. The programs that suffer because of the lack of athletic department revenue, are the non-high profile programs.

Rumors that IU may try to lure Nate Oats from Bama. Bama just extended him; I'm sure the extension included a ridiculous buy-out, but the Hoosiers are desperate.

If he wants to return to basketball, Thad Matta is IU's best option.

Scott Drew is a strong second.

Oats salary went from 2.3 to 3.2 mil per and a 10 mil buyout. He's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Matta is definitely open to returning. He lives in Indy area. He was very close to taking our job.

Scott Drew orchestrated the greatest rebuild in college basketball history, he has Indiana roots. That would be my first choice by far.
