2021 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

Wonder if Forbes reached out at all to Justus, given the open slot on the staff. I still assume it is earmarked for Shay, but Justus would have been a nice add.

Excellent choice. The one issue is that Jones is older. He's in his mid 50s, but when Jones took over Radford (he had been an assistant under Beilein and Shaka), they were horrible, and Jones consistently won there, 5 twenty win seasons, winning record 7 out of the last 8 years. He has some bigtime wins while at Radford: @ Texas, @ ND, @ G'town, @ Penn State. Radford was expected to be awful this past year with Carlik Jones leaving for L'ville and little experience, but they finished 2nd in the Big South behind Winthrop.

I have a whole bunch of Spartan gear I'm giving away if anyone is interested. Should have offered Joel Justice. Old dudes are no way to go for this job.

Which is more likely -- that Jones outperforms Miller's record at UNCG, or that Miller outperforms the Cincy records of Huggins and Cronin?

One of the biggest coaching changes I can remember. A top coach over the last 20 years with 3 championships leaving for a job a few steps down the ladder. Mulkey played and was an assistant at La Tech for about 20 years then coached at Baylor for the next 20 years. LSU is less than an hour from where she grew up. I think this is a family move.

In other women's hoops coaching news, longtime UConn assistant Shea Ralph took the head job at Vandy a few weeks ago. She was one of the greatest NC HS athletes of the 90s up there with Jerry Stackhouse and Julius Peppers. Injuries halted her pro career and she's was an assistant for many years. She hadn't really looked for head coach jobs until now.

Congrats, Coach! Now you finally have enough money to get a grown man’s haircut!

Clemson hired Brownell to start the 2010-11 season. Same year Wellman hired [].

Brad Brownell essentially built his ACC coaching resume owning WF. His career ACC conference record is 95-99 with a 13-2 mark against the flaccid Deacs. Against everyone else Brownell at Clemson is 82-97. Brownell should send some of his newly found extension money to Wellman, [] and DM. FWIW, until 2011, WF dominated Clemson over the previous 56 years of ACC basketball.

One of the most appalling stats from the lost decade.

Brownell knows his place and is being paid extremely well for it.

Don't make frontpage news for all the wrong reasons.
Be moderately competitive. Every now and then, surprise a few people. Make a little noise.
Give fans something to mildly entertain themselves between a bowl game and spring football.

Rinse and repeat. Not a bad gig if you can find it.

Unlike Chris Mack. Louisville is now facing allegations of improper conduct which, while they likely won’t, could result in a four year postseason ban. Already suspended the first six games of the season, Mack could eventually be fired for cause.

Let’s hit the Louisville fan base today with a football win while they’re down. Such a lousy athletic program.

Stephen A was going off on Lavell Moton as his candidate for UNC today. Not the craziest thought in the world and a Hell of a better choice than Stackhouse but will never happen at the Hill. That could be a great hire for them.

Stackhouse needs to do a better job at Vandy before anyone will hire him away.

Cincy has been to the NCAAs 9 times since 2011. WF once. Also, Cincy has a rich NCAA history with two National Titles and six final fours. Bearcats also have a strong following in the City; they draw fans. So, from those angles, yes, Cincy is far better than WF.

That said, they got screwed in the conference shuffle. Playing in the American Athletic Conference sucks, and that conference took a big hit in hoop when UCONN bailed. Houston had a big 2021 season, and Memphis has a some hoop history and a following, but outside of those other two schools and maybe Temple (which Villanova left in the dust), the AAC is a basketball no-mans land. ECU, Tulane, USF don't even really try to compete in basketball. UCF, SMU and Tulsa are have really low ceilings in basketball. Greg Marshall made Wichita State a name, but guessing that program backslides. Programs in the AAC will always struggle to get the revenue and attention that the other Power Conferences have. How many times did anyone watch (or was even aware of) Houston basketball this year before the tournament? That conference just gets no attention, and very limited revenue from TV. Cash is always king.

Could be wrong, but would guess that Wes wishes he was coaching WF basketball, and Forbes would never trade the WF job for the Cincy job. Will be interesting to see where each program is in 4-5 years. Happy to have DR drag this assessment back out when Miller takes the Bearcats to the Final 4 in 2025, and WF is still playing in ACC Tourney Tuesday.

Cincy is the one team I sort of wish the ACC had gone after during the latest conference shuffle.
