Wake Golf 2024 - WF Women Struggling In Moon Golf Invitational

Woof. At least only 2 teams are really distancing themselves. Should be able to hang in there today and make it up tomorrow.

East Tennessee State is beating us by 17 strokes today........halfway thru the round. Ouch.

This is turning into a shit show of epic proportions. Worst team on the course today by 3 strokes right now.

Unreal. Good news is there are plenty of holes left to make up shots. Bad news there's plenty of holes left to drop more shots. What'll it be boys?

No, it doesn't cost money to attend, but it does cost money to run the thing. Who would be willing to sign up to host a regional if their own school couldn't even play there? You think Wake Forest would agree to host a baseball/soccer/tennis/name your sport regional if they weren't allowed to play there?

Exactly! Women been doing their own basketball 1st & 2nd rounds at home sites for years [even if they technically were assigned to a Regional across the country] just to make sure they get decent crowds and make some money. Move to neutral sites for the Regionals Final Four. I imagine they will move back to this same format in 2022 with Covid over. Of course baseball & softball been doing the same for years at usually the higher seed.

Sacramento State dropped out of the regional based on COVID; so, I guess the Deacs are having a better day than them. At this point, clear that tomorrow will be a massive sweat between WF and golf powers like Utah and Denver (and Oregon and Pepperdine) to see who grabs the last two spots in the field. WF is the #1 seed in this region; this is like a #2 or #3 seed in two point game in the round of 64 in the NCAA basketball tournament. Disappointing that WF threw up on itself today.

Well, the whole team birdied 18 to salvage the day. In a solid 4th, 3 clear of 5th.

As pathetic as WF's performance was for most of the day, the Deacs did turn it on to close the round. All 5 WF golfers birdied the 485 yard closing par 4 18th hole (that is pretty amazing). That late move pushed the Deacs up to 4th on the team leaderboard. Currently, WF is 3 shots clear of the 6th spot. Even with the impressive finish, WF will need to play at least decently tomorrow to secure a spot in the NCAA Championship. BTW. Alex Fitzpatrick is carrying the team. He is -7 after two rounds and is in 2nd place in the field of 75.

One of their golfers set a course record. Meanwhile we are firmly in 4th place and finished for the day.

Impressive performance by ETSU's Archie Davies: -6 on the four par 5s. No bogies. Maybe Forbes can bring him to WF along to join Monsanto and Williamson.

WF has teed off and will play the easier back nine first, along with Pepperdine and Utah.

If we assume ETSU, USF and Washington are all safe, two bids are up for grabs.

Also in the mix to qualify for nationals are Florida, Denver, and Oregon - and while they have ground to make up, they are starting on the front nine, which is harder. If they make the turn in contention, that is trouble, as they should pick up a few strokes on the back nine.

The back 9 appears to be easier, but on the first hole (#10) our guys had 2 pars, 2 bogeys and a double bogey. Not a good start.

meanwhile the Deacs are feasting on the back nine's par 5's. Currently in third and 9 strokes clear of 6th, but with the front nine caveat.

Stay ahead of Pepperdine and Utah for the round today, and they should easily qualify.

Deacs played the 14th and 15th holes at 10 under par. Well done.

Deacs up to 2nd, but they have just finished the back to back par 5s on the back which has been the best scoring opportunity on the course. 12 shots clear of 6th place Florida and Washington.

Alex Fitzpatrick has moved in a tie for 1st for the individual title.

Mark Power with a pretty wild first 9 holes. Only two pars and -2 at the turn.
