Wake Golf 2024 - WF Women Struggling In Moon Golf Invitational

Allowing teams to play on their home courses in NCAA Tournament play is garbage and should be stopped immediately.

Stanford finishes 30 shots clear of us in second, and is the only team under par (and -28 at that). Having that kind of advantage clearly affects the outcome of the competition. However, because this way of doing things likely saves the NCAA money, they will keep this system in place in spite of the competitive effect it has.

Who exactly do you think is going to be lining up at the door to host golf regionals if you prohibit the home teams from playing there? This isn't March Madness, where they don't need the draw of the home team to make it attractive to host. You prohibit teams from playing as the host school and you end up with a bunch of goat tracks to play on. Basically every college sport's post-season but the Men's Basketball championship allows the home team to play on their own course/court/field, this isn't just a golf phenomenon.

Does it cost money to attend a Women's NCAA golf regional? Is that even a thing?

No, it doesn't cost money to attend, but it does cost money to run the thing. Who would be willing to sign up to host a regional if their own school couldn't even play there? You think Wake Forest would agree to host a baseball/soccer/tennis/name your sport regional if they weren't allowed to play there?

The Deacon men also head out West to the Cle Elum, Washington regional at the Tumble Creek Golf Club. Play begins Monday May 17. Participating teams play 3 rounds, top 5 teams advance to the NCAA Championship. WF is the #1 seed in the regional. The WF men are currently #6 in golfstat rankings. Other ranked teams in the Cle Elum regional:

#7 Pepperdine
#17 Florida
#20 Arizona
#25 San Francisco

University of Washington is hosting the regional, and they are participating. Not sure if Cle Elum is their home course.

It's not like you can just wait til the end of the season and call up good courses in the top seeds' areas, public or private, and say: "hey we need your course for 3 days, thanks".

Cle Elum is a dinky little town more than 80 miles from Seattle. On the UW Athletics site, they list 5 nearby courses in Seattle where the men play. There is a resort in Cle Elum that might be able to host all the teams.

Fitzpatrick is playing. WF's lineup today:

Eric Bae
Parker Gillam
Alex Fitzpatrick
Michael Brennan
Mark Power

Will the boys and Jerry choke away another one. I have little faith they will move on.

Deacs getting it done on the back 9. Parker Gilliam has 5 birdies in a row. Deacs currently in 1st with the first round about 75% complete.

Gillam on fire. He and Alex tied for first on the individual side as well. Great start.

In tie for 2nd with 2 our guys on 18 at +1, Need a par and hopefully a birdie.

Deacs will finish round 1 in a tie for 1st at -6, but it's super tight among the top 5 teams -- all are within 2 shots of each other. Top 5 advance. Would be nice to create some space tomorrow.

Individually:

- Fitzpatrick is 3rd (-4)
- Gilliam is T4th (-3)
- Bae is T24th (E)
- Power is T31 (+1)
- Brennan is T46 (+2)

There are 75 players in the field.

Awful start to round 2. Every WF golfer is over par except for Mark Power. Deacs have dropped from 1st to 6th with round 2 almost 50% done. Top 5 teams advance. The final round is tomorrow.

Deacs with the second worst team score of the day, so far. Very disappointing.

Early this Spring, Michael Brennan was about the best player in college golf. Recently, his play has been spotty. WF dropped his score yesterday, and he again is bringing up the rear for the Deacs today at +3, including a triple on #9. Hope Brennan gets his mojo back.
