He was a major factor and pioneer in college basketball.

Before being hired at Temple, he had made three Elite Eights and won a National Championship at Cheney State. As that time it was unheard of to go from coaching at an HBCU to a major D1 school.

He made five Elite Eights at Temple and made The Dance 17 of 18 years at one point.

His early morning practices were followed by study halls and making sure his players went to class and kept up with their studies.

Chaney was a mentor to coaches for decades.

RIP Coach...

I was always disappointed he didn't strangle Calipari. But year, heck of a coach.

We kicked his ass with Rodney one year. Worst loss on their home floor at the time, possibly still.

The same week he admitted he sicked one of his "goons" on another team and their player, Coach K had Patrick Whatever the hell his name was mug Chris Paul repeatedly and K was applauded as a coaching genius. Cheaney was a great guy who admitted he made a mistake in that instance. K sucks and has always been a bad guy. He can look good when all is going well; who can't?

I recall Chaney/Temple being the runner up in RR's recruitment. He definitely made them sorry that day w/ 30+ points in a dominant performance
