2021 MLB Season Thread

Ump admitted post game he blew it. I mean, he was ready to punch him out on a called strike - how does he not know a strike cannot be a HBP?

Umps can be fooled on pitch location. And whether or not the batter has leaned into the strike zone.

Padres finally have a no hitter. Pretty cool it was a San Diego area guy to get it too.

Andrelton Simmons to the covid related IL. While never good to see, there’s something truly embarrassing here. Simmons has pushed antivax on his social media, covid hoaxes, and that the vaccine killed Hank Aaron. He declined to take the vaccine a week or so ago, as well.

Tough way to lose the perfect game. Great play by Abreu to save the no hitter.

All Hail the AL West leading Seattle Mariners. They will be the division leader for at least 24 hours.

On Tuesday, during the Blue Jays/Red Sox game in Fenway, Bo Bichette hit a bomb that flew well past the Green Monster. The ball landed on Landsdowne Street near a recently closed Gold's Gym. That's the same Gold's Gym where Bo's dad, Dante, met Bo's future mom, Mariana, when Brewers in were in town in 1991. A member of the Jays PR staff was able to negotiate the return of the baseball for some Jays swag. Pretty cool.

BTW, the home run was launched. Knew Bo Bichette had game, but didn't know he had that kind of pop. Just like Old Dante....

In 1999, Dante Bichette hit .298/.352/.541, with 34 HR and 133 RBI. He had a bWAR of -2.3! That is absolutely amazing

Bo is awesome. Waaaayyyy better than his dad. Plus he's got great flow.

That seems like the kind of story that should be getting some traction. Like if MLB wants more casual fans drawn to their sport, that would be a good story to tell.

He definitely knows the rules.

Did they really take away to protest a game? Why? That happened <5 times a year, took no time during a game, and were rarely upheld anyway.

Can't protest or review anything having to do with balls/strikes. While he was about to ring him up he stopped and awarded first. Only thing that could be reviewed is if it hit him. It did. Either way no protest.

It happens so fast. And umpires follow a pitch routine through the catch which was interrupted here. Plus you have bases loaded with two outs and strikes in a tie game in the ninth. You almost never see this in MLB and it blew up on him. He obviously screwed up. The commentators are still idiots. The pitch was a strike but "no attempt to avoid being hit" on a curveball is dumb and would never be interpreted that way.

So if a batter can hit a home run in five pitches, their team probably wins the game. That’s true in extra innings as well. Can’t see how that would be that exciting or different enough unless they used derby pitchers as well.

Just watched the sports on TV. Cardinals hit my best player (Harper) in the face and the Phils get warned. Sweet Jesus! See you tomorrow.

Yeah that was stupid. But I think bean ball battles are mostly dead. It was clear the guy had thippy control.

Didn't say it was intentional. True this may be a failing of the 3-batter rule. Solve that by having him ejected for the safety of the players. One in the face, one in the ribs, what more do you need? By warning Girardi, the ump takes away his options, plus he's being warned for doing nothing. It's bullshit.

If the opponent provides the pitches, then the whole thing would be a mess. The pitcher would just throw five way outside, like the former intentional walk pitches. Would need to be five strikes - batted balls, swing and miss or called. For it to be a true home run derby, the hinting team should provide the pitcher. No fielding required if it is homerun or nothing.
