I remember the first time I saw the Avett Brothers at Reynolds Coliseum in 2005 and was like "whoa what is this??"

I mean, go get that bread and all, but I can't think of any career arc that better encapsulates selling out than AB

I still play some pre-I and Love and You stuff every now and then

Rose's is an incredible establishment, btw. You people don't know what you're missing.

It seems impossible to me that this place is still in business. When we lived in the Asheville area 20 years ago it seemed like they were on the bring of shutting down. Yet I still see them from time to time in certain parts of NC.

One of the very few positives of the pandemic is realizing that I pretty much never have to go to the grocery store again. It makes so much sense.

oh man I love being in a good grocery store

very stimulating place

I am like a less-than-zero patience person so it’s very grating and frustrating for me. All the idiots wandering around, kids everywhere, other bullshit. Especially now with idiots wearing masks poorly and practicing zero social distancing. That said, we are going to check out the new Wegman’s in Chapel Hill this weekend to see what’s up.

Addiction by Design is still a top 3 academic book for me - incredibly readable ethnography of gamblers and casino/slot design

I remember turning down dozens of invites to see the Avetts at tiny little places growing up bc I was into big touring bands mostly. Only local bands I remember seeing in high school were Jump Little Children and David Mikush band and rock the block, obviously, though I'm sure there were others at ziggy's (help, friends?). We were seeing tons of touring bands though.

Then the moment I moved away from North Carolina the avetts became a super nostalgic treat and I saw them a dozen times at least while living in Texas. Weird how these things work

so you can't enjoy a thing because it has been designed to be enjoyed?

look if you teach your kids critical thinking skills don't be surprised if they are start pointing out that your enjoyment can be designed/co-opted/used

i'd argue if one acknowledges that it's designed to fool the sense and can get over the sense of smugness about it one might be able to enjoy it even more than the ignorant

Man, fuck amusement parks, am I right?

my least favorite activity in the world is waiting in line (and traffic) so I just can't get into amusement parks

I guess you might think this contradicts my grocery store take BUT I'm very thoughtful about timing my trips for non-peak hours -- I have a whole shopping strategy to minimize line-waiting
