Biden/Schumer/Pelosi Accountability Thread

A lot of that is holdover from Trump's MPP policy and the Biden administration trying to sort that out. I don't think they are handling that perfectly, but it's a mess to try to undo. A lot of private funding is needed immediately to bridge the gap until the gov't can fund a solution.

Biden is expected to sign the PD today, but from what I'm hearing may keep Trump's all-time low ceiling of 15,000 in place. He would include regions that had been previously excluded under Trump.

Very disappointing after his earlier rhetoric, EOs, and campaign promises.

Can that number later be increased based on demand?

Who woulda ever guessed the same Joe Biden jailed in S. Africa while visiting Mandela has a history of saying something untruthful?

Demand for cheap labor?

I have no idea what the demand for refugee asylum is or what the numbers have historically been or how many more people have wanted a spot than got one.

It also looks like he is lifting the cap.

I suspect that the (bullshit) reason for keeping the cap very low is that there is already a huge surge of asylum requests at the Mexico border and they think raising the number will encourage more people to come seeking help. So, it’s a super dumb way to try and suppress demand.

...and likely an attempt to guard against idiots charging his administration with an “open border” policy.

It never fails to amaze me at how so many Democratic pols and talking heads are always so concerned - some might say obsessed - with trying to placate and win over the GOP base, while the Republican base, pols, and talking heads are only concerned with ranting at how Democrats are worthless, anti-American socialists who need to be destroyed, and do nothing but block and vote against everything Democrats want.

The GOP has to drive their turnout of the base to have any shot and that’s what plays to the base.

The Dems need “moderates” to come to their side. They’re not placating the GOP base.

If both sides play the extreme only (because of gerrymandering) the GOP wins.

I agree that I would prefer if some of the Dems would have more of an “elections have consequences” attitude.

But I’d prefer more that the GOP continues to lack full control of Congress and the White House.

I’ve never seen good evidence of this omnipresent claim.

How many moderates do you think there are?

Due to gerrymandering and states, Dems need every vote they can get with no margin to spare. Republicans have a huge margin for error.

I should reframe what I think the problem is:

Look issue by issue at what is broadly popular and then tell me Dems need to be more moderate

I don’t think that reflects the argument. Put the two posts together and the argument is that Democrats need to placate a wider ground of people who don’t see themselves as Democrats or Republicans.

Yes, the policies are broadly popular. But Democrats would lose a lot of people with a fuck them attitude. Plenty of polls show the voters we need want progressive shit but prefer for it to be bipartisan and don’t like antagonistic politics. So Dems have to be the nice guys or else people do the whole “both sides” crap and don’t show up.

I generally and specifically disagree. $15 minimum wage is just as popular in Joe Manchin’s district as in Pelosi’s.

Sure. But that has nothing to do with what anybody is arguing. We even know that people will vote for $15 and then vote Republican like in Florida.

Could it be because the Dems in Florida didn’t run on a $15 minimum wage?
