Biden/Schumer/Pelosi Accountability Thread

Your first point is interesting to consider.

On your second, there are probably some politically disinterested young people who would be moved to a favorable opinion by legalization.

Yeah. Good point. That would move the overall numbers.

A lot of what we see as political shifts are largely demographic shifts in race and size of age cohorts. For example, something like 55-60% of white people have voted for the Republican candidate (or Pub + Perot) in every presidential race since 1980 except Reagan getting 66% in 1984.

Isn’t the proposed cap gains increase only on people making more than $1 million a year?

I need to see the actual proposal when it's available before deciding if I think it's a good idea. Is the $1 million threshold $1MM in ordinary income (all capital gains for those filers taxed at the higher rate) or is it $1MM in capital gains in a given year or is it any transaction with a $1MM capital gain? Is the increased tax on the entire gain or just the portion over $1MM? If we're creating a new threshold, is it $1MM for a single tax payor and a higher amount for a couple filing jointly or $1MM regardless of filing status?

I would absolutely fall in love with Biden if he legalized marijuana.

WTF is Biden doing about material costs? A sheet of OSB is $38! Same sheet was $8 a year and a half ago.

Kinda hard for him to fix global supply chain issues in a short period of time.

Biden is giving a good speech. Dare I say a boldly progressive speech.

The structure of the speech is fairly simple.

Here's a problem in this country --> Here are some facts to show this is a problem --> Here are some ways we can address this problem --> We've got a bill that passed the House to do just that or Congress needs to do something --> Move to next topic

Seems like a problem in this country is a buncha poor folks who can't afford to have kids are having kids. Having government pay for all these kids via tax credits and subsidized nannies seems to just encourage more of the problem.

Republicans should generally like this plan as way more Pubs have kids than Dems

Well many of them live in places where abortion is stigmatized and it’s harder to get.

Well except for those Republicans about to get audited

well yeah that's dumb. Wonder if all this subsidized child care will do to child care costs what it's done to higher education costs.

I think I can get behind a sweedish model socialized daycare + significant paid family leave. Just don't like the whole using taxpayer dollars to subsidize the poor , as just like with higher ed we'll just end up with $50k daycare costs cause it's ultimately paid by taxes. Make it free for everyone. It seems like the grand compromise is socializing some services in exchange for securing the border and making it so we aren't an attractive place to come illegally.

Between Capital Gains, COVID and now not allowing like-kind exchanges, the past year has just been brutal to all commercial real estate owners. Not that that matters to the economy at all.

People aren’t coming across the border for social services. They are coming across the border because people are paying them more to do jobs here than they can make at home. Go after the people illegally paying them and you significantly decrease the motivation for people to come in illegally.

Agreed. Like biden did with funding the IRS, in CA, for example , we do have raids and shut some down, but there are 10 still operating for every 1 shut down. Fund that or do some sort of required e-verify thing and you change things drastically. Something like 1/3rd of all restaurant workers in LA are undocumented.

This is only part of the story. Many of the migrants from Central America are fleeing violence and a changing climate where their way of life is no longer sustainable.

To add to Birdman’s point, the US is directly responsible for the violence and destabilization in places like Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.
