Biden/Schumer/Pelosi Accountability Thread

He’s also on pace to deport 3.5 million more people than Obama.

ICE deportations fell in April to lowest monthly level on record, enforcement data shows

President Biden and his Department of Homeland Security team have issued new rules to rein in ICE officers, who were afforded wide latitude under the Trump administration to make arrests and were encouraged to boost deportations.

Biden has resisted calls from activists and some lawmakers to abolish ICE, and his top DHS officials say they will reform the agency and restore its reputation by focusing on criminals who pose public-safety or national security threats. In private, ICE officials say their work is being essentially abolished through restrictions on their ability to make arrests and deportations.

Since Biden changed ICE’s priorities and ordered a 100-day deportation moratorium, interior arrests by ICE officers have plunged more than half, records show. A federal judge blocked the 100-day moratorium in February, and the Republican governors of several states are suing the Biden administration to force a reversal of his ICE directives.

The latest federal data shows ICE has recorded about 37,000 deportations during the past seven months, putting the agency on pace for fewer than 55,000 deportations for the 2021 fiscal year. It would be the first time that figure has fallen below 100,000.

“This administration has de-emphasized the likelihood that people would get arrested if they aren’t a threat to public safety or recently crossed the border, so they are not going to have strong removal numbers,” said Ronald Vitiello, who was ICE’s acting director in 2018 and 2019.

“That’s part of a signal being sent — that immigration enforcement isn’t a priority for this team,” Vitiello said. “The odds of being arrested just for being in the country illegally were always extremely low, and now they’ve basically ruled it out by policy.”

I thought the purpose of the unemployment and direct payments was to reduce the spread of the disease by helping people to stay home and not have to go out and work.

The jobs report was disappointing yet jobless claims are dropping dramatically and the unemployment rate barely budged despite more and more people looking for work.

People want to work, they just don’t want to do shitty work for shitty people. If there is a viable alternative to the latter, they’ll take it.

Basically our workforce doesn’t suck, the jobs they were doing suck.

If the exploitation of low wage workers ends as a result of COVID that would be a very nice silver lining.

The average North Carolina state unemployment is like 200 dollars, the supplemental pushes that to 500. Wow a whole $12.50 an hour, I can’t believe people aren’t running to sign up for these awesome jobs everyone keeps complaining aren’t being filled they surely must be paying more than that and a living wage.

The average weekly UI benefit in March was $351.09 (up to $651.09 with the $300 FPUC bonus) which is roughly the same after-tax pay as a job that pays $17.90 an hour.

Of course it differs from state to state but where is the incentive to work a $22/hr job ($45k+ per year) when you can sit on your ass and collect the equivalent of $18/hr after taxes for doing nothing?

And this $45k per year job exceeds the federal poverty level for a family of 8.

Um, that's not how it's supposed to work though.

Also, not being considered enough is that the PPP FINALLY was made available to 1099 employees this spring, so many gig workers got a nice influx of cash they missed out on last year and they are now taking their sweet time coming back into the fold.

The concept of “defense” seems to justify violent offense.

I happened to be downtown during a big Palestinian march

very emotional -- lots of families and children

The Israeli army spokesperson’s office said the strikes targeted Hamas’s “underground military infrastructure”. As a result of the strike, “the underground facility collapsed, causing the civilian houses’ foundations above them to collapse as well, leading to unintended casualties”, it said.

So they bombed the foundation of the residential area and were surprised it caused the residences to collapse? Could also be stated, we don't care how many civilians die, there are some bad guys there too.

Shameful our government is not only accepting but defending these actions, though not entirely surprising given our own efforts in the Middle East.

Very glad that the US is consulting with the President who just cancelled the first elections in 15 years because he was afraid he’d lose.
