Official 2021 College Football Thread: Grass Picker Named to CFP Selection Committee!

If you're an 8-4 Va Tech team that upsets 11-1 Clemson (or WFU) in the ACCCG after playing Syracuse and BC from the other division and losing your only competitive OOC game, you don't belong in the CFP. Period.

See 2009 ACCCG when 8-4 Clemson was ranked #25 and lost by 5 points to #12 Ga Tech, a team they had already lost to in the regular season.

Really don't get that argument. IIRC, the Braves won the WS this year, and had the worst record of any team that made the playoffs. Tampa was the 5th seed in the NFC, and won the Super Bowl last year. In 2015 UCONN wasn't ranked, there were a #7 seed in the East Region, and won the NCAA tournament. In every sport and every year, there are teams that don't have the best regular season (or even close to the best), yet they win the title. That can even happen this year. If UGA beats Bama on Saturday and Houston upsets Cincy or Baylor beat OK State, Bama is probably going to get in the CFP, even though UGA was clearly better than Bama during this season (and even beat them head to head on a neutral field to END the regular season). Even so, Bama would likely get a CFP bid, and if they beat UGA on the second crack, the Tide is the Champion, even though UGA had the better overall record and beat the Tide to end the season. That system seems more messed up to me than giving a bid to every team that "earned" a conference championship as part of an 8 team playoff.

Sankey apparently doesn't understand the word "earned".

Every other sport has automatic qualifiers that make the playoffs by winning their conference or division.

That’s a fundamental part of American sports.

It’s weird how hard college football works to avoid excitement. Why bother with a postseason at all? Just play the bowls and crown a champion.

Is the stupid 2 point conversion OT rule also in place for the CFP and conference championships? Or is it like Manfredball (10th inning runner on 2nd) where it’s only a regular season thing?

It’s all about maintaining a power structure not facilitating competition.

Right but why even bother with the playoff charade? Obviously it’s the extra revenue, but it seems counter intuitive to a structure that just wants desperately to eye test crown a champion rather than a team win on the field.

Well they used to do that but wanted more money.

It’s all about maintaining a power structure not facilitating competition. Crowning a “real champion” was just a ploy.

That’s some pretty fucking good recruiting. Imagine if he wasn’t checked out all season.

Well you see Riley was recruiting for USC through OU. This is bigger than Wakeyleaks, the FSU free shoes scandal, the BC betting scandal, SMU getting the death penalty, Lawrence Phillips beating up his girlfriend, and George O’Leary lying on his resume combined.

The Millennial Participation Trophy Bowl?

But seriously, this is a good idea. If the standard now is that 6+ win teams go bowling, no one should get left behind.

Yeah it’s silly but there is no reason not to do this every year.

Here are the teams who were at risk of being left out:

CUSA - ODU, MTSU, North Texas
MAC - Miami (OH), Ball State
Sun Belt - none
Mountain West - Wyoming

It sounds like it was leaning toward Miami (OH). I think the MAC was the one without enough bowl slots.

LOL
