Elgin Baylor has passed. He founded Baylor University in his native Washington DC before later moving the school to Waco, Texas. He then went onto a long career in the NBA as a player and executive. RIP Elgin.

As horrible of a franchise as the LA Clippers were for decades under Baylor's direction, he was still able to trade Danny Manning to the first place Atlanta Hawks for Dominique Wilkins, who was their leading scorer, and a first round draft pick. Manning and Wilkins both became free agents after that season. The Clippers picked Grig Minor with that pick (#25) and traded him to Indiana in a package for Mark Jackson. Minor was released by the Pacers, but signed with the Celtics and played his entire 5-year NBA career with them, averaging 6.9 points per game and finishing third in an NBA All-Star Dunk Contest.

Elgin Baylor broke ground all over the place

Nigle Tufnel was named after him (look in the mirror). Elgin could turn his intensity up to 11 when the other guys were stuck on 10.

RIP.

He was one of the greatest player who ever lived and is greatly forgotten these days. His stats are more like a PF but he played a lot like a SF. He averaged 27.4/13.5/4.3 and had several 30+ppg seasons. His worst rebounding season in his first decade was #11 and he was in the Top 12 in assists seven times.

Baylor was one of the first high flyers. There were rumors that into his early 60s he would hold his own with Clippers players.

As a SF, I'd only put Lebron and Bird definitely ahead of him with him being about equal with Dr. J.

Elgin Baylor accumulated more screen time at the NBA draft lottery than all other NBA executives combined. He had to join AFTRA because he was on TV so much.

Elgin Baylor was so popular when he played that they named the Chicago suburb of Elgin, IL after him.

Elgin Baylor set the blueprint for Connie Hawkins, Julius Erving, Michael Jordan and LeBron James. He was a player you emulated growing up.

RIP

Don't know if he was joking, but Elgin once said he was named Elgin because when his father learned that he had been born, he looked at his watch to see what time it was. The watch was an Elgin. Elgin went on to say he was glad it wasn't a Timex.
