Justin Gray ('06) Named Head Coach at Coastal Carolina

anybody heard anything about Gray's assistants at WCU?

Jayson Gee was the associate head coach at Winthrop and went to Cincy.

Gee also has served as an assistant or associate head coach at Youngstown State (1990-93), Ohio (1994-96), St. Bonaventure (2004-06) and Cleveland State (2007-13). While at Cleveland State, Gee helped guide the Vikings to four 20-win seasons and four postseason appearances, including an automatic bid into the 2009 NCAA Tournament, where the Vikings knocked off Wake Forest in the first round.

Graves was an assistant at Hampton.

Freesman was DOBO at Winthrop.

Bachand has been on the Wake staff for several years as Director of Equipment Services. She was a fixture behind the bench. Curious how many women are DOBOs in men's D-1 hoops.

With the transfer portal wrapping up and next year's roster firming up, here is where WCU roster sits:

- 7 of WCU's top 8 players in scoring and minutes transferred to other schools
- Assuming he returns, Soph Tyler Harris will be WCU's most accomplished returning player. The 6-7 Harris averaged 6 ppg 5 rpg and 25 minutes per game
- No other returning Catamount averaged more than 10 minutes a game or 4 points a game
- WCU landed 4 JUCOs, two D-1 transfers (one was LaRavia's teammate at Indiana State; the other is from Valpo) and one incoming frosh, Fork Union G Marcus Banks; it appears Banks had one other D-1 offer, Hampton

The SoCon is a tough conference (although they have lost a lot of coaching talent over the last 3 years), and the WCU roster is not exactly stacked. Looking like a slow build in Cullowhee.

A little reminiscent of Carl Tracy’s early chores. Remember that HE came to Wake as a head coach from a junior college.

Ferrum Jr College where he had huge success then to Marshall. When at Wake Tacy hired the head coach who followed him at Ferrum as an assistant. He left Wake for the head job at Evansville and was killed in the plane crash with the basketball team.

WCU is playing Georgia tonight.

I love JGray, but why is a losing record "doing work"?

12 wins is more than they had all last season. And the season before that. Historically, they have been a low performing team, with an occasional good year.

Small on campus arena. Cash infusion from DR.

Prosser left Gray with nothing last year; the Cats could've been among the worst teams in the nation, and WCU played hard all year.

This season, WCU was expected to struggle again. The SOCON is down, but WCU is out performing expectations. They never turn the ball over. Gray was able to land a handful of contributors through the portal. Gray has to further the develop the program to move up the coaching ladder, but the early signs are good for Justin.
