2021-22 Proposed NCAA basketball rule changes

They also tried 6 fouls for DQ in the late 80's or early 90's. It was during the height of the Big East and their "physical style of play." There were muggings under the basket and in the lane. The game got ugly and constantly interrupted with foul calls. That rule did not last long then either. Basketball has some short memories.

Think this is the biggest one mentioned. Would speed up the end of the games. Teams would have to focus on just playing effective D, and it would eliminate the foul to prevent a three point shot.

This should be combined with resetting the shot clock to 30 seconds, like it would be if the free throws were taken. Also should give the inbounder freedom of movement. Maybe whole baseline or half sideline, front court or backcourt.

Fine with the two steps so long as it's actually enforced. The NBA is pretty laughable at their adherence to step limits.

Total misconception about the rule on a "spot" throw-in, whether it is coming from the TV announcers, coaches or players. There is absolutely nothing in the rule in college that says anything about taking two steps is a violation. Not 1 step, 2 steps, 3 steps or whatever. The violation if it occurs from a "spot" violation is not a walking or traveling call like you see on the playing floor. If it is called, the official is supposed to just point to the floor and signal by pointing the other direction for the other team.

The actual "spot" on the floor for a throw-in after a foul or violation [not after a made basket where you get to run the entire baseline or pass it to another teammate who is also out of bounds on the baseline] is actually 3 feet wide. That means the thrower-in can take as many steps as he wants inside there. Theoretically he can make the spot about 6 feet wide as long as he has a foot inside the proverbial spot, just like a pivot foot, as he throws the inbounds pass with one foot out on the throw & one foot still back inside the 3 foot spot. Also the spot is as deep as the person is able to go so there again there is no step limitation because the thrower-in can always go backwards as far as they want to.

All that said about the actual rule, throw-ins go to the nearest spot after a foul. Throw-ins on the sidelines are never anything more than a spot throw. It is very doubtful they will give that person the ability to run on the throw-in so the team making that choice better have a great throw-in play, over & over & over.

For the throw-in instead of free throw, make the throw-in an endline one, just like after a made basket.
