Michael Collins, astronaut, command pilot for the Apollo 11 mission, has died. He was 90. He circled the moon while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. Another of the first generation space flight pioneers is gone.

He said the most terrifying time in his life was the three and 1/2 hours waiting for the lunar lander to make the trip from the moon and complete docking. He didn't want to be the sole survivor of the mission.

He was selected to be the commander of Apollo 17 and land on the moon, but retired before that mission flew.

His wife and son predeceased him.
Condolences to the remaining family and his friends.

I was in hotel room in Baltimore waiting to go to cousin's wedding.

To give you idea of how AMAZING this was, Fareed Zakariah had tidbits of knowledge. And iPhone has $1,380,000 times the memory of Apollo's guidance system.

Had Nixon not been sucha COWARDLY crook and cut NASA sooo much, we might be very close to living on MARS. Man has explorations in his DNA. Add to this that NASA has paid for itself many times over via inventions like Invisibleline and Nike Airs it created and NASA's budget should be many times what it is.

He was also instrumental in the creation of the Air and Space Museum, serving as the first Director.

oh rj weighed in

I still have the front page of the July 21st, 1969 Newark Evening News framed in my office. The headline is “Moon Tasks Done”. Has a pic of all three of them. Also a smaller headline lower in the page, “Kennedy Faces Charge of Leaving Accident”.
