Coach K Retiring After This Season

I will always remember when I shook K’s hand in the mens room at the Barbary Coast casino in 2004. Post wash, of course.

I hope we give K a motorcycle on his farewell tour since he’s bitched about the Harley so much.

You're UNC and Duke, and you end up hiring Hubert Davis and Jon Scheyer. That would be :chefskiss:.

These kids with their skateboards and rock music drove him to retire

At least Scheyer is young.

And let's be honest, Duke is/was going to take a step back regardless of the hire. You aren't replacing K.

Huge opportunity for Scheyer, but would have been a riskier move for someone with a strong resume as a college head coach.

I read this as:

The competitive advantage he had worked so hard to build is going away and he doesn't want to compete on a more level playing field.

If scheyer is still head coach in 2026 then I’ll be shocked. I mean, Jon scheyer????

It's a lot to adapt to for a 70-something coach. He's already adapted to the one-and-done era. College basketball is going to transform tremendously over the next 5-10 years.

Rat face gonna make us suffer thru one more season. ESPN already difficult to watch will be impossible to bear with the K farewell tour.

Meh. I haven't really watched college basketball in the last 11 years. What's one more?

We'll always have the scheyerface story from that MD kid.

Every single game of their schedule will be prime time ESPN for the K Fellatio Farewell Fest...

:sick::sick::sick:

Typical that K would maneuver for that, while Roy would just quietly move on. Stark differences

I kinda like that K is going to stay on for one more year, gives the head coach in waiting scenario more ways to go wrong. If Duke struggles again this year, are their fans really going to be happy with Scheyer taking over. Also, everyone on the basketball staff from assistant coaches to secretaries will have an entire year to worry if they will be retained or let go when Scheyer takes over...lots of potential for plummeting morale and/or acting in your own self interests instead of the team.

I think the coach-in-waiting set up means the basketball staff is safe. Some of them may go elsewhere, but got to think they're safe. They probably already have the replacement coach lined up.

If it's Scheyer, it will be pointed out that amongst DU, WFU, NCSU and UNC, Duke is the only one not to have made a minority hire in their men's bb and/or fb programs(can also throw in other in-state "majors" ECU, APP State and UNCC as having hired minorities in the past). And that's no small thing at an "elite" university located in Durham, where race & culture are always at or near the surface.
