2021 Wake Forest Soccer Thread

checking in for the first time this season: we are pretty bad this year, right?

Bad, no. Not great? Probably. Based on my RPI calculation, we were likely in the last 4 in for the tourney. The pieces are there to make a run, and it seemed like we were gelling as the season progressed, but it’s time to tighten up and get creative.

Man, rona, that was an incredible ball from holcolmb wasted

The lack of crowd noise on the broadcast is bizarre. Like it’s creepy silent when the announcers aren’t talking.

Now we’ve moved on to the round where we usually begin except we won’t be at home. Hope we have a magic run in us. We obviously are playing much better than we were at the beginning of the year.

Atmosphere at Spry was nothing like NCAA tourney games in the past. Not sure if people just didn't get as amped on the team this year, or if it was a weekday thing or what.

Good win though.

It's been a more muted atmosphere all year. I basically attribute it to two main factors: 1) a disappointing start to the season, which probably cooled interest from the more casual students more than in other years, and 2) the decision to charge (or charge more) for tickets. With the latter in particular, this feels like a pretty natural consequence: if you start charging for something that's previous been free (or start charging more for the same thing), you run the risk of alienating some of the longtime fans (as they did with The Congregation at the start of the year). Maybe a third factor: they didn't start advertising that a Wake ID badge would get you in for free until like halfway through the season, after attendance was already suffering.

What happened with the congregation specifically?

But yes we have talked all year about the increased ticket prices, seemed a little off putting. 80 bucks for a family of 4 to get in during the reg season is steep.

They started charging for the Hill and the Congregation was super pissed about it.

$20 a ticket???

WF plays #13 FIU on Sunday. If WF advances, they would play the winner of Villanova and ND (#4 seed). Seems doable. ACC has 7 teams in the final 32. Oregon State is the #1 seed. Seems surprising as have no recollection of previous Beaver soccer success. Also, Stanford is not in the field.
