It’s the summer time and that means minor league hockey is not far away. So far this offseason play by play announcer Drew Blevins got the call up to the SPHL (Fayetteville), teams selected players from the Danville Dashers and a new team was announced Binghamton Black Bears. Season ticket inquiries are now up on the website for those interested in season tix/mini plans. I have added links below for the stories above.

The season is right around the corner for the 2021-2022 Thunderbirds. Since head coach Andre Niec left for the NHL, the birds have found his replacement. Garrett Rutledge comes to Carolina from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)’s Saginaw Spirit. The Birds released their schedule for this season with the home opener on Oct. 29 vs the Delaware Thunder. Season tickets are still on sale and single game tickets will go on sale soon. I have will add the links below.

On a related note, the youth/girls/sled hockey program in Winston is finally getting rebranded as the Jr. Thunderbirds after being the Icehawks since 1996. It makes sense, but I loved the throwback to my college days.

The Birds start the season 2-0 this weekend with wins this weekend. Both games the Bords defeated the Delaware Thunder 8-3. The Thunderbirds will be back home November 5th and 6th when the Watertown Wolves come to town. Puck drops are 7:35 pm and 6:05 pm. I’ll drop the links to buy tickets and tonights post game recap down below.

Attendance:
Friday - 2,544
Saturday - 2,188
Average - 2,366

I was bummed out by the atmosphere last night.

I walked over from the football game, during the first intermission. I figured somebody had been seriously injured in the first period, or something.

I'm hoping they haven't made a mistake by taking away access to the glass in the season-ticket/bar area, etc. It just felt very different.

... then again, maybe it's just early for hockey season.

Go birds.

I have a feeling this year is going to be reminding people that there’s hockey in Winston. It’s been over 600 days since the Birds have played in the annex. It’s fairly easy to forget about if you dont have season tickets and only go to a handful of games a year. Plus with Wake football being a Top 10 team the Birds are going to struggle for that big Saturday crowd until college football is over. I’m in San Diego so I haven’t been to a game in 3 years but this Friday will be my first one so I’ll report on what the atmosphere is like. My opinion is that the average crowd will be ~2,000 per game if they’re lucky with the occasional sell out. With 2,000 fans the Birds are still raking in money hand over fist just not as much as the previous seasons.

The Birds welcome the Watertown Wolves this weekend with a game this Friday and Saturday. Friday’s puck drop is at 7:35 and Saturday's puck drop is at 6:05. Plenty of tickets left available for both nights. Link for tickets down below or get em at the box office. PARKING IS FREE.

JERSEY ORDER: There is a jersey order going on this week. Custom name and number with red, black, and white available to order. Cost is $190. Link is below to fill out a form to buy.

ITS GAMEDAY!!! I have touched down in the TreFo and ready for my first Thunderbirds game in 3 years! Puck drops at 7:35 at the annex. Plenty of tickets still available! You know how to buy them.

The Birds got swept this past weekend by the Watertown Wolves. They lost Friday 6-4 and Saturday 5-3. That pus there record at 2-2 and sit 4th in the league with 6 points. I didn’t watch Saturday's game because of Wake-UNC and the UFC 268 but I can tell you on Friday night it sounded like the buzz was coming back to the annex. Slowly but surely the team and the fans will get back to how it was in 2019 and before. The Birds welcome the Columbus River Dragons on Saturday, November 20 at 6:05 PM.
