Valparaiso's New Mascot: Beacons (NWT)

It's a lighthouse - has ties to their location in NW Indiana and the lighthouses that are along the coast of Lake Michigan.

NW Indiana is notorious for whiteout conditions and lake effect blizzards - it isn't quite Buffalo, but they often get several feet more snow than the city of Chicago does despite being only about 30 minutes away.

The only problem is the campus and the city of Valpo are miles from the lakeshore. . . . pretty terrible choice.
 
After reading the ESPN article, it doesn't seem like they based it on proximity to the lake (which is good since they aren't really proximate to the lake) but on the school's motto ("In thy light we see light.") That makes it a little better, but not much.

Its 13 miles from campus to the Indiana Dunes National Park, I don't think anyone is going to be that upset

They say that the name stands for whatever they like, but their logo is a fucking lighthouse, which is very clearly related to those found along Lake Michigan.
