2021 Football Coaching Carousel

LOL, what ? Were they afraid Scheyer was going to bold for JMU if they didn't pay him enough ?

Duke obvs could have gotten Scheyer for a lot less, but the narrative for a long time has been that unlike say UNC or KY that recruit themselves regardless of the coach, Duke's "brand" was highly built by/dependent upon K, and they would fall off after his departure. The job Scheyer has done putting together his first class is impressive. If he can coach a lick they should stay on top for a while.

Hell, I thought Dukes basketball recruiting was going to fall off a cliff after Jeff Capel went to Pitt, but Scheyer became the main recruiting assistant after he left and Duke’s recruiting improved. K has been rumored to leave for the last 5 years basically and Duke still gets literally whoever they want.

Wake has hired Cornell College (DIII not Ivy) Outside LB's coach Josh Wilson to join the recruiting staff. His bio below

Wilson joined Cornell’s football staff in August 2021 as outside linebackers coach.

Wilson played collegiate football at Arizona Western College and Saginaw State Valley University. He played multiple positions as a tight end, outside linebacker and defensive end. After a foot injury ended his playing career, Wilson transferred to the University of Toledo and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2018.

Wilson coached cornerbacks and also served as academic coordinator at Carroll University during the 2021 spring season. Later that spring, he was named defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at the Peddie School (Hightstown, N.J.) before landing his current position at Cornell.

Wilson was defensive line coach and assistant academic coordinator at East Coast Prep (Great Barrington, Mass.) in 2019. He coached defensive line at Saint Patrick High School (Chicago) in 2020.

As a prep athlete, Wilson attended perennial Illinois football powers Mount Carmel (12-time state champion), Downers Grove (1-time state champion) and Wheaton Warrenville South (7-time state champion). He played on the 2011 state runner-up team at Wheaton Warrenville South and graduated from there in 2013. [/QUOTE}

Young and hungry. I like it.

Thinking Duke would fall off is funny

Duke’s recruiting 1 & dones coincided with Capel joining the staff, and he was the lead recruiter for every major Duke recruit for like 5 seasons, didn’t seem likely that Jon Scheyer had that recruiting juice to keep it rolling, but I guess he does?

Does this fill our open coaching spot? re: number allowed?

No, Wilson will be a non coaching staff member. No real limit to the number of those you can have but they are prohibited from any kind of on field coaching. Looks like he will essentially be a scout breaking down and cutting up film.

Turns out, dropping bags is easier than they thought.

Syracuse picking up the pieces from UVA. Dino Babers hiring the OC and QB coach to the same spots on his staff.

I guess Recruiting Staff means something other than Coaching Staff. It would make zero sense to hire this guy as a defensive coach with his experience. It would also indicate that we are elevating from within and using him to fill a spot vacated due to elevation, which also makes no sense.

I wouldn't read the hire of a recruiting staff person as indicative of anything other than Clawson hired another recruiting guy. The number of this type of staff person is fluid.

I still look for Clawson to add a Defensive Coordinator from outside his current staff.

this position is basically an internship. if he does well he could get promoted to grad assistant.

I would also imagine that Clawson upped the budget for this staff with his new contract, so we could add more folks.
