2021-22 Men's College Basketball Season - UNC v. Kansas for the Natty

Gonzaga is pretty good.

Cincinnati finally lost, but it was tight. Wes is doing a great job given where the roster was when he was hired. Oguama with 10 boards in 17 minutes.

The Deacs and Duke are the ACC last two undefeated teams. Duke plays #1 Gonzaga on Friday.

Miami is inept. Larranaga lost his mojo years ago. The ACC has so many trash programs

Rick Pitino and the Iona Gaels beat #10 Alabama just now. Pitino is an animal.

UC Davis is a mid-level D1 program #211 rated ahead of several of WF’s opponents. Today, UC Davis played a non-D1 school named “Academy of Art. Academy of Art won by 16.

Passed on that game. Need to spend more time breaking down the California Fine Arts Conference

I chuckled.

ACC/B10 Challenge starts tonight with the B10 favored in both games. Looking at the match-ups, the ACC would be fortunate to take 4-5 of the games. Haven't won it since 2017.

ACC is a dog in tonite's games other than us and Duke. Looking forward to seeing us in action for the 1st time this season. And watching the Illinois game, why didn't Cockburn leave for the NBA last year? Dude is still an absolute beast in the post.

Enjoyed a good game here last night. McCaffrey has a typically solid team, though they got less assertive on the offensive end in the 2nd half. Bohannon can shoot. They did 2 things in particular that I like against UVA - they played a lot of zone, and they posted Clark up on D a few times for easy baskets. And last night was the 1st time Tony gave more minutes to Murray off the bench than he did Stattman and Poindexter, who both suck on both ends of the court. We've been wondering why Tony hasn't been giving him minutes.

Big picture musing that aligns with the tongue-in-cheek thread title — the conference realignment shuffle and the big money that comes with it will make the SEC/Big 10 dominant not only in football, but basketball as well. Larger overall AD budgets, more money to hire away the best coaches, etc. The conferences that have historically been basketball first will see their competitive position impaired as they settle for second tier or emerging coaches (see all of the ACC hires in the last five years — side note: I do love Forbes and think he will work out among the mid-major risers set).

The Big Ten has historically been good so maybe no change there. The SEC seems like the biggest winner in the last couple years and moving forward, and the ACC/PAC-12 seem to have been hurt the most so far among major conferences. I’d guess the Big 12 is the biggest incremental loser from here. The A-10 has seen their best programs pillaged and hasn’t been particularly good the last handful of years among the mid major set. CUSA used to be good and is just a nothing conference now too.

What could confound this theory? Success of the Big East. Dropping football or playing at 1A could allow a shift in resources to basketball that keeps them relevant? Trying to do both well without the top notch budget seems more difficult?

Where is this theory right/wrong?

The flaw in the Big 10/SEC dominance theory is that arguably the best conference over the last two years is the Big 12, and they are the least well-funded conference of all. Last year, the Big 12 had the NCAA winner (in dominant fashion) in Baylor, and they were the #2 rated conference overall. This year, the Big 12 is the #1 rated conference. FWIW, the ACC is down because they don't have a lot of marginal coaches (Capel, Pastner) coaches past their prime (Larranaga, Boeheim, Brey) or unproven coaches (Hubert, Keatts, Grant). The Big 12 just has a better roster of coaches right now (Beard, Drew, Self, Huggins).

Was looking at KP stats today, and something popped out in the "so predictable" category: in K's last season, Duke leads all 358 NCAA teams FTA per FGA. This essentially means that reffs are calling fouls against Duke's opponents at the highest rate in the country. Duke basketball always gets the benefit of the doubt on foul calls, but even that advantage is ramped up this year.

Holy hell that Purdue kid is a giant human.
