The Official Fire Lyle Hemphill Into the Sun (Durham) Thread

Forced three turnovers (two of which we immediately gave back), stopped the run effectively, got numerous stops in the first half and some big stops down the stretch... this should have been a blowout and the 4th quarter shouldn't have mattered. that's about as good as you can ask for from our d based on what we've seen this season

The prevent D rushing 3 has never worked for us and needs to be abandoned. Rush 4 and make them work to get done the field and put the qb under some pressure.

Yes- down the stretch we need to avoid it. Especially again BC- PJ will carve us up like a Thanksgiving turkey if we give him enough time to smoke a cigarette

I'll never understand it. State scored in a minute and didn't have to burn a timeout. Great job by the defense on Saturday night, but what works the first 28 minutes of the half should be employed in the final two minutes. Overthinking things.

Regardless, so happy for Wake's team and fans. Truly the Lord's work, and that defense did their job on Saturday night As a resident of the Triangle Media Market, the ratings chasers who sell orally respirating state fans what they want to hear continue to publicly marvel at yet another fluke victory by Wake over State in Winston-Salem. Intelligent people don't get confused by what happens 90% of the time, but then again,...well, do the math.

As the thread starter, gotta give Hemphill credit for a solid scheme for 90% of the game. It's also apparent that the talent (and even depth) is there to perform at a high level if properly schemed. Now, the 3 man rush, prevent defenses at the end of each half were mind boggling and marred an otherwise impressive performance. I still think bringing in a proven, veteran DC next year is a necessity. Hell, make him a "co-DC" like several other teams have done, if you don't want to demote/fire Hemphill.

Yeah. It would be a missed opportunity not to bring in a veteran DC. Most DCs would love to work alongside an offense that averaged 45 ppg and put up 35 every game and should return almost everyone.

Still think he has to go. Saturday showed that we have some talent, so the performance against UNC was purely scheme. The prevent we play does not even slow them down. Keep pressure on the QB is the best defense we can play.

This just isn’t honest. Devin Leary is a statue. He didn’t make us pay for poor tackling linebackers and secondary players. We do have some talent. Especially on the DL, and they can have great success when they don’t have to defend sideline to sideline in the backfield.

Carolina has a more mobile QB and is a worse matchup for us.
In game injuries limited our ability to scheme.
While the state game had a lot of possessions, they were mostly 1st half.
2 drives eating 10 mins top Q4 was huge.

(is this the part where I say that pretty much every person on the defense graded extremely well, especially at LB and DB or is that another thread?)

They all played great. Didn’t mean that as a sleight at anyone this week.
