2021-22 Wake Women's Hoops Thread - Hoover fired after 10 seasons

2021-22 Women's Basketball Thread (7-0 vs. 7-0 Nebraska on Wed at 7:00 pm on ACCNX)

Down 52-38 halfway through the 3rd.

Poor shooting all around. 1-15 from deep. 14-30 inside the arc. #1 for the Huskers cooled off but everyone else stepped up.

Tough loss 86-60. Huge reality check.

The Lady Deacs defeated Troy 90-61. Jewel Spear had 30 points on 11-19 fg, 6-9 3pt. That’s her second 30+ point game of the season.

Freshman Elise Williams had another strong game tying with season high 15. She’s averaging 8.3 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast. She also has a steal and 0.9 blk a game. She’s averaging 10.6 pts over the last 5 games.

Transfer Niyah Becker had 13 and 11. She’s been a valuable pickup for Hoover.

Lady Deacs play tomorrow morning at 11 am vs. ETSU.

Coach Hoover and frontcourt starters Becker, Summiel, and Morra are out due to health and safety protocols. I think Scruggs got injured vs. Nebraska and hasn't played since.

Hopefully they’re able to return before Georgia Tech on Sunday.

Up 35-29 at the half vs. 1-8 ETSU.

They do a WS/FC school game every year before the holidays

It’s actually really cool. Would be really awesome if the baseball team could squeeze in one on an early Friday series. The more young Deacs we can forge locally, the better.

Up 62-41 at the end of the 3rd thanks to a 27-12 edge in the 3rd.

The freshmen have stepped up. 6-2 F Malayla Cowles has 18 and 7 on 8-8 shooting. 6-0 G Alyssa Andrews has 8 reb. 6-0 G Raegyn Conley has barely played this season and has 14 pts.

Jewel Spear put on a show for the kids in the 4th with a logo three and 20 pts. Career-high 40 on 14-25 fg, 10-17 3pt shooting. First 40 point game for Wake since Dearica Hamby.

Cowles with a perfect 20 and 11 double-double on 9-9 shooting. Her previous high was 4 points.

Deacs win 90-58. Outscored ETSU 55-29 in the 2nd half.

Women's games with Evan and Stan are so much fun to watch. Evan drops a bunch of early 00s Wake knowledge and they both blatantly root for the Deacs.

With 4 starters out, Spear goes off for 40. 10 three pointers! 3rd highest scoring game in Wake women’s history.

COVID currently seems pretty active in the Wake athletic department. I worry about our other sports getting hit.

Understandably, the elementary school crowd wasn’t nearly as big as other years.

Well if there's any time to get hit, it's now. No students on campus. ACC hoops season is a few days out.

In other women's hoops news, Georgia Southern beat some school named Carver 133-15. GaSo had 8 players in double figures. Only 3 players scored for Carver.

Just a heads up to those who drop in occasionally on women's bball: this team is also 9-1 and not receiving votes...

The ACC has 6 teams in the top 25. UNC just snuck in at #25 - they are 9-0.

10-0 Nebraska, who beat us by 25 at the Joel, is getting votes.

The margin of loss to Nebraska is what is keeping WF from getting top 25 votes. WF needs to beat a Power Conference team to overcome the stain of the Nebraska loss. WF plays GT next Sunday. GT just beat ranked UGA and UCONN (UCONN's first loss to an unranked team since the Stone Age). So, GT is now ranked. If the Lady Deacs beat GT next weekend, WF could slip into the top 25.

It’s going to take a few ACC wins to get on the national radar. The tournament math for the women should probably be getting 8th or higher in the ACC play and making the quarterfinals to get on the bubble. Lady Deacs play at #18 Tech on Sunday at 6. That would be a great win to get some attention.

2021-22 Women's Basketball Thread (#54 NET; 9-1 vs. SC State on Wed at 7 on ACCNX)

Oh I don't either. It would take massive improvement simply to get to .500. Last year's team barely got into the tournament and they lost their two best players. I imagine plenty of teams they play actually kept their top players from COVID which is going to increase the talent gap.

By the way, the Jen Hoover show is on the Deac2Deac podcast.

Quoting and acknowledging this before I get got like Pilchard did. I was wrong. This is good team and fun to watch.

Women are up on 0-9 SC State 23-7 at the end of the 1st after starting up 16-0. Spear already has 11. She may be gunning for 40 again.

Hoover is back on the bench but the starting frontcourt and Scruggs are still out due to health and safety protocols. Really hope they’re back for GT on Sunday.

In other action, #1 SC is playing at #15 Duke tonight.

The freshmen have been forced into action and played very well the last two games. Maybe Hoover will have more depth than expected during conference play.
