2023 WF Baseball - Schedule Released

Adler has to get it together if he is going to be our closer. Can't be walking that many.

maybe just the nature of college ball but feels like we’ve had a lot of wild closers between adler, supple and roberts

Love the W but afraid some of the old Walter showed up. Hartle pitched a great game but it was a good time for a reliever. So, Minacci comes in. He does a great job pitching a ball to strike percentage of .75 and 0 runs, but is yanked after 1 inning. Next, Crum comes in and has a decent .67 on just 15 pitches, again 0 runs.. OK. We put in our closer, who quickly gets us in trouble. He can't seem to find the plate, gives up a run, and walks to load the bases, now with in 4-2 game (vs 4-1 game). Has a full count but he gets out of it with a strike. That was great, given a walk there makes it 4-3, bases still loaded, and still needing 1 out. (Pitched at .44)

Now, I know it could be hindsight, but still, why do you pull a pitcher after 1 inning who just threw a great inning? Again, if it's to "get experience", why do that in a close game? Ok for blowouts but especially when we get to ACC games, shouldn't Walter sub to win? Seems more appropriate. If there is a different angle by someone who knows more about the game, please share.

Adler is our closer is a projected high draft pick and was the MVP of the Cape Cod League. I think the idea that Walter decision-making should be criticized here is off base.

It is not unusual to set up your staff for certain roles. Seems reasonable to have your starter go 6, have a guy who can cover the 7th and then another guy cover the 8th and bring in your closer. Just because one of them doesn’t get the job done in a non conference game where you should be trying to get guys comfortable in what you will look for them to do during the rest of the season, does not make sense to keep guys in longer than planned or yank guys sooner than plannned.

Just win, baby, just win.

Now in a situation where you can't really trust guys and their roles then I think it makes more sense to use less pitchers in a game especially when one is pitching effectively. This is the first time we really had a pitcher who's had serious control problems in a game 11 games in

Very disappointed that there isn’t a game today. I’m loving this team.

agree with the above. set roles are a good thing by default. easy to criticize in retrospect but no guarantee that guys wouldn’t struggle in a second inning either. but also agree it’s good to diverge from set roles when it makes sense pragmatically. so much of the job is keeping kids content and bought in so hard to know what really goes into decision making.

the only guy on the team who is really struggling is brennen oxford. crums emergence has been huge. also walter alluded to zach grace (lefty transfer from iona) might take a significant role when he’s back from some injury plaguing him.

This thread reads like we've imploded, when we're actually 11-0. Yes, the schedule's about to get a lot harder...but can't we enjoy this strong start?

No it doesn’t. People are thrilled. Yesterday was a roller coaster stand alone game and people got into it.

Coastal game should be interesting. Not sure how they are this year but they’ve been very good recently.

#8 NC State got swept by Northeastern at home. Another great example of how anything can happen in baseball and why it’s so big that we’ve yet to drop a game because we’ll definitely lose some and definitely lose some that, on paper, we shouldn’t lose.
