College Coach arms race will it reignite realignment ....

Mizzou.

Nebraska would be in favor because they might win a game.

Virginia.

Doubtful - expansion is about football and Virginia football would just add another bottom feeder to the Big Test East. Doesn't add that much in terms of market either, as the Big Ten already has DC thanks to Maryland.

Again, another bottom feeder for the Big Ten East - Boston is at least a new market, but how'd adding the Boston market work out for the ACC?

Cincy has a nice recent history, but there's a reason why they weren't part of a major conference until their upcoming addition to the Big XII - let's be honest, most Cinci fans are already watching the Big Ten because they're Ohio State fans.

The first legit option posted here - actually adds a market to the Big Ten West and would be a natural rival with a few of the programs out there. But would moving to the Big Ten cover the cost of leaving the SEC? Especially now that OU and Texas are in the fold, I don't think it does.

I'm not sure that adding Notre Dame creates enough additional value for the Big Ten to justify adding them - the conference already pays out $54.3M to each school compared to the $37M that the ACC pays out. The Big Ten would presumably want ND along with another school to maintain divisional balance, but who else would you poach that could cover that?

This can't be serious

The math isn't that crazy. The big issues are that the B1G payout is already pretty high and that they would want to add another school in addition to ND to keep the divisions balanced.

Assuming current $54.3 million payouts to member schools and that the B1G would have to add another school in addition to ND, those two schools would need to drive at least an additional $108.6 million into the pot that gets split up to maintain current payout levels. ND would do its share. Realistically, the other school poached would need to be someone like UNC.

TL;DR Rutgers hopped on the gravy train at the right time.

Kansas, who will desert the Big 12 at the drop of a hat.

Maryland and Rutgers traded whatever relevance they had in football for money. If you are a fan, I’m not really sure what good that does you. Stadium upgrades for a team you don’t really want to watch? Can’t be fun when half your home games are getting stomped by michigan, Ohio state, MSU and penn state.

Not to mention you went from drivable distance of most of your conference to an expensive flight (or multiple flights) to a town in the middle of nowhere USA. These moves are not for the fans and are a detriment to the fans.

Exactly. The average fan does not equate into these decisions at all.

As discussed in the coaching carousel thread, these aren't rich people problems. And the rich boosters cut the big checks so they're the ones that need to be kept happy. I'm sure the Rutgers AD doesn't care a whole lot about how many folks who donate the minimum $100/year make the road trip on their own dime to Ann Arbor or Columbus. They care about being able to throw a rich booster on the team plane to go to the Big House and make them feel special while they're asking for more money. Away games at UConn and Temple probably don't have the same effect. And this is on top of the conference payouts.

To be fair - those are tough teams that most people lose to. That being said, MD should be much better than they are - huge market, huge recruiting base in that part of the country, and they have the Under Armour founder as an alum. If they played cards right- could be the East Coast’s Oregon but for whatever reason - bad coaches, bad timing of conference re-alignment, etc.- it just hasn’t happened.
