2022 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

This is probably going to depend on Juwan's relationship with admin/team. If there was any other history/negative track record, he's probably gone. If this is really out of character for him, he's suspended several games and invited back. He was wrong at basically all levels on this one and it caused players to start fighting. You can't sweep this under the rug and just move onto the next game.

The only thing that can be swept under the rug in college hoops is outright cheating in recruiting.

Yeah, I don't actually think he'll be fired, but UM has got personality problems with both of its revenue producing coaches. If he had punched a player he'd already be gone though.

There was also the time he knocked over the trash can after losing the national championship game.

It's at least Howard's second run-in with an opposing coach. He got into it with Maryland's former coach Mark Turgeon about a year ago at the B1G Tournament. He was ejected for his actions in that game.

Link to a report on it. Michigan related site.

If Forbes punched K in the face would we really want him fired?

I’d prob be pretty thrilled. Also, if it was K who punched literally any coach of any team, I’d be the first in line firing off everything under the sun calling for him to be fired.

The trash can thing is pretty weak. I hope all of our players would be that emotional after that kind of a loss. Juwan is totally wrong here, but being a passionate competitor is part of being great at sports. He needs to learn to rein it in.

The trash can thing was a joke.

And it's "rein," like what you do to a horse, not what you do as a monarch.

I believe Juwan needs to be fired. This is his second violent outburst (or threat of one) in the past 12 months. the first was a threat to kill an opposing coach - this time he struck one. What happens the next time he goes nuts?

Jamill Jones didn't think he was going to kill the guy he punched. If Juwan seriously injures someone, Michigan is going to be sued for mega $$ because they kept a loose cannon in their employment after knowledge of his violent nature towards opponents.

The personality problem with Harbaugh is . . .

He's a weird dude who wears Dockers and has sleepovers with recruits.

He also knows he's in a dead end job, can't compete nationally with his best team ever, and is constantly looking for the exit.

This is prob a good point, although it was more like a “bitchslap” than an actual punch. I wish I had a better word for that, but I don’t.

Thanks Biff. Appreciate your insight.

You might want to spend your time worrying about the "personality problems" in UGA's basketball program though.

Good points. Has a college basketball coach physically hit another player or coach in recent years? The only things I can think of are Bob Knight choking a player and Chaney saying he was going to kill Calipari and having to be restrained. That was years ago. Knight was against players and refs. It's interesting that it is against other coaches, usually a tight network. Howard can't have many friends left there.

I went back and saw his post-game when he had the dust up with Turgeon. Howard basically said he is from Chicago and that's how things are handled when someone comes at you. He didn't say that this time around.

If he does get fired, would bet he's done in CBB ranks.

Stephen A and Kendrick Perkins - basically think Gard should get something as well. He probably mis-read Howards level of how pissed off Howard was.

People are saying heat of the moment. Remember this game was long over. It wasn't a battle to the final second.

One good comment was, just coach your team. If Juan want's to press down double digits against walkons in the last minute, ok (no one at the pressor had the guts to ask him that, 'Juan why was it necessary to be pressing when the game was over and the walkons were in for Wisc, the reporters probably didn't want to get punched). If Gard wants to call a TO because he's being pressed and it resets the shot clock, fine.

The fact that Juan was not smart enough to express some contrition in the pressor, will work against him as well. It was mostly 'here is why I took a swipe at a guy' instead of 'I shouldn't have done that'.

Mich has no choice but to suspend him. Going further I doubt it would be a national issue if they keep him.

The Big Ten should have him suspended by this evening. But, as that league is a total clown show, we'll see what happens. My guess will be that tOSU will instruct the league to issue a lengthy suspension and endorse Woody Hayes punching a Clemson player 44 years ago.

He should be fired and if he's not UM will deserve the hit to its reputation. Completely over the line.

The morning sports shows seem to have a bias to penalize Gard as well. Juan had his mask on, which limits your ability to see how pissed off someone is. Maybe not mask Gard is 'ok fine let's not shake'.

If Howard had hauled off and punch Gard after he touched him that might make sense but clearly his grabbing his arm was not what escalated it, I think.

Either way, Gard doesn't get much beyond a short suspension and a small fine. It feels like these commentators are using Gard to defend Howard's actions.
