ACC Considering Eliminating Divisions In Football

Give every team 3 permanent rivals. The rest of the schedule is 5 other teams in even years and 5 other teams in odd years. Rotate the home and away. Play rivals every year. Play the rest of the conference every other year. Guarantees a road trip to every ACC stadium every four years, so it's great for local fans of other teams. This would make the conference feel like a real conference.

Nothing could be better for Wake football than removing divisions and playing Duke, State, and UNC every year and playing Clemson every other year.

We wouldn’t get UNC. ACC is going to give UNC Duke, State, and UVA.

I agree with this 100%, but UNC-UVA will be protected before WF-UNC, unfortunately.

Yeah. I said what would be best for us, not what would happen. It's quite possible they stick with UNC-UVa and give us VT or something like that.

Probably accurate. WF would get State and Duke, and then some rando team that doesn't have rival, like BC. Don't forget when the ACC initially expanded, when setting the basketball schedule, they assigned each team two "natural rivals" that would play home and home each year. WF didn't get UNC or Duke. WF was assigned NC State and GT Tech. Yes. GT Tech. Obviously, the ACC didn't GAF about WF's natural rivals, they paired up the teams that they thought would create the most buzz, and GT and WF were leftover. Fully expect something similar to happen in football as well.

Yeah that duke Maryland rivalry was particularly egregious

The beauty of the plan I laid out is that even if we get screwed on the rivals (which I agree is likely), we'd play every team every other year anyway.

UNC will get UVA instead of Wake.

Edit: SCOOOOOOP !

IMHO, there is absolutely NO downside for Wake Forest in eliminating divisions. Not having to go through Clemson and F$U every year would be refreshing and helpful.

The Athletic had an article advocating for division-less football a few weeks ago, and here were their proposed ACC rivalries:

Boston College — Miami, Syracuse, Virginia Tech

Clemson — NC State, Georgia Tech, Florida State

Duke — North Carolina, Wake Forest, Syracuse

Florida State — Miami, Clemson, Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech — Clemson, Florida State, Louisville

Louisville — Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech

Miami — Florida State, Boston College, Pittsburgh

North Carolina — Duke, NC State, Virginia

NC State — Clemson, Wake Forest, North Carolina

Pittsburgh — Louisville, Miami, Syracuse

Syracuse — Boston College, ??, Pittsburgh

Virginia — Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Wake Forest

Virginia Tech — Virginia, Louisville, Boston College

Wake Forest — Duke, NC State, Virginia

I would prefer something like, though I won't be holding my breath:

Boston College — Miami, Syracuse, Virginia Tech

Clemson — Virginia, Georgia Tech, Florida State

Duke — North Carolina, Wake Forest, NC State

Florida State — Miami, Clemson, UVA

Georgia Tech — Clemson, Virginia Tech, Louisville

Louisville — Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Georgia Tech

Miami — Florida State, Boston College, Pittsburgh

North Carolina — Duke, NC State, Wake

NC State — Duke, Wake Forest, North Carolina

Pittsburgh — Louisville, Miami, Syracuse

Syracuse — Boston College, Louisville, Pittsburgh

Virginia — Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida State

Virginia Tech — Virginia, Georgia Tech, Boston College

Wake Forest — Duke, NC State, UNC

Whatever changes they make will almost certainly further delay a Wake Forest football game at Pittsburgh.

underrated how nice it is to have Duke as the Coastal rival under the current structure

The Duke-Cuse rivalry makes no sense. I'd like to say Wake-UVA makes sense but it doesn't. Duke-UVA and Wake-Cuse make more sense.

Yeah, but over the last 15 years or however long we've been doing this, the only team who has really been screwed by their rivarly is GT. The Duke advantage probably isn't that big compared to most other matchups.

What's magic about three rivals as opposed to four? From a UNC POV, I'd rather lock in those four games (or five, with Va tech) than have the majesty of games at Syracuse, Miami, Pitt, Louisville and Boston College more regularly.
