2022 MLB Season Thread

With launch angle getting so much ink, it isn't surprising that the baseball poobahs did something to make it less effective. Games are more entertaining with more base runners and more hits, not just Homerun/strikeout at bats.

Messing with the ball isn't a good solution to this. It is however the laziest solution, so no surprise it's the angle MLB would take.

And if the end product is lower-scoring games, that is a pretty hard sell as more entertaining

Probably more so that pitchers are just really, really good. More velo than ever and breaking balls are literally lab designed to maximize spin efficiency and break from the same “tunnel” as fastballs. The stuff that today’s pitchers have is just ridiculous. Throw in shifts (for one more year anyway) and the deck is just stacked against hitters. Check out pitching ninja on Twitter - it’s difficult to comprehend how anyone ever puts the ball the ball in play.

If you’re not familiar with pitch design and Edgertronic cameras, read up. It’s silly how advanced pitching has become, particularly in more progressive organizations

Yep. In 1969 they lowered the mound in a panic, totally ignoring that the 1968 season had 8-9 future hall of fame pitchers.

They never learn. Just give credit where credit is due. No need to mess. Cycles.

Agreed, to an extent. And while April is SSS, there is a pretty drastic difference in HRs even with average ball speed and launch angle staying the same for barrels. I think I saw an Athletic report just came out saying Manfred deadened the balls for this year as an attempt to standardize the balls or something. From the sounds of it, both pitchers and hitters hate the current ball.

Trevor Bauer suspended for two full seasons. Trevor Bauer is a weird dude, and it's bizarre situation, but he hasn't been convicted of any crime. That said, it's easy for MLB to suspend him because other MLB players hate Bauer; so, the entity that is tasked for defending Bauer's ability to play, the MLBPA, has no interest in fighting for Bauer's right to play

Mets with the first (combined) no-hitter of the season against the Phils. About 160 pitches, which is a record for a no-hitter.

I thought he MLBPA won't be involved until the Dodgers try to void Bauers contract, at which time they absolutely have to defend him.

And this feels like Bauer will get it reduced if not completely overturned on appeal.

Light interest here but what the hell. Just looked at the Phils schedule in May.

Suffice it to say that it is brutal. Surviving May and still trailing by single digits may be a good thing.

The good part is that it is still May.

Thought we had one wrapped up today. Nope. One of the larger 9th inning meltdowns we've had, and with the way our bullpen's been over the past few years, that's saying something.

Phils had an 99.8% win probability entering the top of the 9th up 7-1. The amazing thing is that the Mets rally did not include a walk, a HBP or error; so, the Mets earned it. They did have two infield hits, including one to leadoff the inning.

Phillies bullpen....

Phillies bullpen much more like the "firemen" in Fahrenheit 451.

Yesterday, the White Sox blew a 8-2 in the 9th inning against the team formerly known as the Indians. That came less than a week after the Phillies did the same thing against the Mets. Prior to that, no MLB team had blown a 6 run or more lead in the 9th inning in 857 games.

As part of the Indians comeback, OF Josh Naylor hit a grand slam to tie the game in the 9th, and a three run homer in the 11th. As long as baseball has kept RBI as a stat, no player until Naylor last night had 8 RBIs from the 8th inning on in an MLB game (Naylor also doubled in a run in the 8th).

Last night against the Yankees, the White Sox starter Dylan Cease pitched 4 innings (12 outs) and struck out 11. Good outing right? Nope. Cease gave up six runs on six hits (2 HRs, a triple and double) as the Yankees bludgeoned the Sox 15-7.

Quick story I heard recently.

At a meeting of players, executives and media, a group of media were discussing the origin of statistics. The statistic of a "quality start" (6 or more innings pitched and 3 or less earned runs surrendered) was being discussed and the talk was lively, with a wide range of opinions. To gain perspective and settle a dispute the group sought the opinion of Sandy Koufax as he was walking past their table.

"Sandy...what did you considered a quality start back when you were pitching." Without breaking stride, Koufax replied simply..."Shaking the catcher's hand as we walked off the field at the end of a game with a win".

MLB (and sports leagues in general) are really pissing me off with these one off games on a different network.

2 of the 3 Braves games this weekend are being broadcast exclusively on streaming options. 1 on Peacock and 1 on (I believe) AppleTV.

I’ve got enough subscriptions as it is.
