-Study identifies brain mechanism that may drive the link between childhood deprivation and trait anxiety-

“New research suggests that socioeconomic hardship during childhood leaves children vulnerable to lower cognitive ability in adolescence and increased trait anxiety during adulthood. The findings, published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, further suggest that these effects are driven by the recruitment of the right lateral prefrontal cortex.

Growing up in poverty can have negative repercussions on mental health. For example, children who grow up in socioeconomic deprivation demonstrate lower cognitive ability and report higher trait anxiety as young adults. Researchers Pavla Čermáková and her team launched a study to investigate this interplay between early socioeconomic difficulty, cognitive ability, and trait anxiety and to shed light on the neural mechanism behind these relationships…”

Research based on longitudinal study of Czechoslovakian children born in early 90s. I trust the findings, but with that cohort it seems like there was big fucking confounding variable on both stress and poverty.

scholars are still working on clarifying the mechanisms, but it's a pretty known fact that growing up in poverty is correlated with toxic stress (or allostatic load), which has a ton of negative cognitive and physical effects over time

for the most part, though, it seems like experts are still divided over whether the driver is class (and all of the various intersectional overlays), environment, or epi/genetic

stupid poors should just buy a bigger brain

what about the fact that the first quarterly tax due date coincides with your annual tax due date?

fucking lame

The is the poverty cycle jhmd and angus pretend to care about by supporting the squeezing the margin of error even tighter on the working class to teach them to pull themselves up

Silver spoon assholes who think they pulled themselves up love to say people who grow up in poverty can actually pull themselves up. I never figured out if they actually believe that or they just hate poor people and want them to suffer.

idk if that's really a question after seeing who jhmd works for
