Auto titles

So my son moved to Dallas and took his vehicle, which belongs to us. He would like to buy a new car and we've told him that he can sell it and use the proceeds toward the new vehicle. The problem: I can't find its title. Of course, when I access the North Carolina DMV site I can't get any information that makes any sense. Do any of you know what I can do here? I can't take the car to the DMV because it's 15 hours away. Ugh.
