Jesse Bates and the Bengals are at an impasse. The Bengals placed the franchise tag on Bates, and as a result, there is a July 15 (today) deadline for Bates to sign that offer (1 year at $12.9 million). To date, Bates has not attended any off-season mini-camps. Bates says he's not signing, and the Bengals are not inclined to offer a long-term deal. So, if Bates doesn't sign today (unlikely), he may either sit out the season or get traded during camp: https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/07/12/jessie-bates-tweets-stay-down-stay-grounded-ahead-of-july-15-deadline/

Jessie Bates did not sign his franchise tag yesterday. It will be interesting to see if he plays under the unsigned tag or holds out all season. If he stays out, like Laveon Bell did, he would be an unrestricted free agent in March 23.

Supposedly Cinci only offered to guarantee $4 million more than the franchise tag, but wanted a five year deal.

The Bengals took a FS in the 1st round so they prepared for this. They took another one in the 5th as well.

Leverage for long term deal vs one year money? He bet on himself leaving Wake early and he is now a Top Safety ready to get paid.

If he signs the franchise tag deal, he gets the $12 million for 2022 but has no guaranteed money beyond that. Sories I've seen say he wants franchise tag level money for 4-5 years, with a lot of it guaranteed.

If he plays this season on a franchise tag deal and gets hurt, there might not be a big payday in his future.

Exactly. He has to look out for his future, not just this season.

$12MM is nothing to sneeze at….

In his profession, as good as he is, it kinda is. The franchise tag salary puts him 10th in NFL safety salaries. The guys with bigger salaries are on multi-year deals with average annual salaries between $15 million and $19 million. Generally half or more of the money is guaranteed.

On the open market, Jessie would probably get a 4 or 5 year deal with an average annual value in the high teens millions with a lot of guaranteed money. Somewhere between 4 yrs/$16 million per year and 5 yrs/$20 million per year. And at least $40 million guaranteed money.

Top paid safety is on a 4 yr/$73 million contract with $36 million guarenteed.

Bengals are notoriously cheap, and they do have some cap room (about $15 million), but there's already speculation that Joe Burrow is going get a record breaking contract: https://www.si.com/nfl/bengals/gm-report/three-agents-thoughts-joe-burrow-second-contract-bengals#:~:text=%22One%20agent%20replied%20saying%20he,attempt%20(8.9)%20last%20season

Burrow is eligible for an extension after this season, and the numbers that are being thrown around are 5 years for $275 million ($55 million AAV). So, not hard to see why the Bengals want to avoid long term commitments for other players right now. Guessing they are hoping that Bates will agree to a one-year deal at the franchise tag number ($12 million+), but if Bates refuses to agree to a one year contract and if they can't find a willing trade partner, the Bengals have the type of stubborn front-office that would just play chicken for the rest of the season. As Ph noted, the Bengals did draft safeties, but if they want to make another Super Bowl run, relying on rookie safeties is probably not the way to go.

Fair enough. I thought the tag gave you the average of the 5 highest paid at your position?

The franchise tag makes sense for some players, but it doesn't for Bates. Playing this year would be a huge risk. Sit out and he would get much more than $12.9M in guaranteed money next off-season.

Massive deals to QBs really limit what teams can do at other positions. The NFL hard cap makes salary capanagement much more important there than in other sports. Brady taking less than he could have gotten really helped New England win some super bowls.

$55M? By comparison, the entire Bengals defense 2022 cap hit is just over $109M.

Bengals will need to pony-up for Jamar Chase too and Tee Higgins if they want to keep him. Always easiest to build a roster behind a QB on his rookie contract. Once he gets the big deal, the rest of the roster feels the impact.
