Sorry, but that's wrong too. When it was invented 100 years ago, the patent was sold for $1 and it was freely available until the original patent expired. Access to it has declined as prices have surged, and mostly that's the US. Outside the US where governments negotiate drug prices or where patent protections make it easier to create generics, it's less of an issue. And of course insulin is just one key example.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Walgreens and CVS on multiple corners in every small town 100 years ago, plus the ample logistics and supply chain management to fill all needs on demand. Not to mention the plethora of clean needles, ports, and other ancillary equipment. Plenty of people were still using their outhouse, but it was like a Golden Corral for insulin availability for all who needed it!

I'm not sure of your point from that ... the US uses more insulin?

The flip side of that paragraph is that one out of every two people needing insulin for type 2 diabetes does get it. And apparently more. That 50% is probably better than the 0% that it was when our overall standard of living was lower.

100 years ago, NO ONE who got diabetes would get insulin and all of them would die quickly. half of them now get treatment, and let's ignore how the other half must feel since at least they have directv and a/c and their dying days are way better than 100 years ago

i'm all for congratulating capitalism on the good that it has done in the world, but it's still worth examining the ways that it could do better, and bringing inexpensive treatments to the people who need it seems like a place where we need a little more enforced socialism blended in

I completely agree with that. What I don't agree with, and the original focus of this line of the thread, is wasting resources worrying about or simply being jealous of the handful of people who are insanely rich because of the system. Good for them and the system.

That handful, which has exploded in a very short time, have built that insane wealth on the backs of the 50% who can’t afford said insulin. But this isn’t really an argument worth pursuing.

It would be fun as hell to have billions and give it away to people that really need it and deserve it. I have a total of about $11 dollars and it is still fun as hell. That would be an incredible feeling to give it away for good causes the way Buffett and Gates do. A buddy of mine sold his business for $400 million a couple of years ago and he tells me there is absolutely nothing he can do to spend it faster than it accumulates now. He's been paying for college educations for deserving kids like crazy. Things like that. Damn that would be fun.

You should tell him that I’m a pretty amiable guy and I’m tired of working. Or he can sleep with my wife for what a million dollars in 1993 amounts to now when adjusting for inflation.

Homebuilders know jack shit - Why don't these rubes just shut the fuck up and listen to the experts??

If only there might be some reason capitalists that make their money in the house building space might be upset that they can't keep building and selling non-stop. Let those markets coooooorrrrrect on their own. I think I did that right.

Leave to Angus to post a tweet where everyone dunks on the ridiculousness of a tweet.

There are plenty of people who want a recession because it’s good for their business and/or politics.

Huh?? Sure there are some businesses/industries that weather the storm just fine during a recession.

But anyone delusional enough to believe people in the private sector are actively rooting for a recession (for any reason) should step outside of the academia bubble and spend some time in real world for a change.

New mortgages are at a 22 year low. The housing market is about to come back to earth.

Thank goodness. I have been looking for a new house for about 6 months. Can't seem to justify 400k for a 3 bedroom 2 bath that was worth 185k in 2019.

Lower than '08/'09 is a mindboggling and frightening stat.

Not sure about you guys but I sleep better at night knowing the Biden economic team is at the helm of the ship.
