Basketball Recruiting Megathread 1.0 has run its course

I don't think we really have the luxury of redshirting him. Our front court is not exactly loaded and lets not forget that Thomas will also be a freshman.

I think Thomas will be ready to play when he steps on campus. Not really expecting much from Andre until his junior season. It will probably be a toss-up between Green and Washington at that stage as well.

Agreed. From what I have heard Andre is a project. I hope he will come into his own here, but we need to keep recruiting that 5 spot heavily.

Still growing.....that's two kids we have still growing.

Strong academics.

Most comprehensive report I've viewed on Cavanaugh can be found here:

Apologies if this has been posted earlier. Whatever the case, congrat's to the coaching staff for getting on this kid before the rest of the pack.

Great article.........
-very smart kid academically, good personality and coachable
- "6' 8" kid with point guard skills"
- working hard in the weight room and is 6' 8" 225 and still growing
- seems to play with a chip on hi shoulder

I'm liking everything here.

If he could end up being a Dunleavy-lite player WF has a steal.

Bobby Fritzgibbons was from Buffalo. By the way a UNCC friend said they beat us by about 15 to 20 points. Wow.

Deacons Illustrated Update on Gill

No real "news." Anton still does not have a list of favorite schools. The article focuses on UNC, Louisville, Wake, and NCSt. Mentions that CMM and Rountree are recruiting him pretty hard.

I'm not sure that's what they're referring to when they talk about point guard skills. Dunleavy is a much better, more fluid athlete, definitely a small forward. Perhaps Cavanaugh has maximized his physical potential and will continue to do so, but I still see him as an average athlete, at best, in the ACC. That's not a bad thing, in my opinion, as Cavanaugh is definitely a face-up 4 in my book, who can facilitate a bit out of the high post and is a solid passer in the low-post. Whether or not he develops into more than a three-point shooting specialist remains to be seen and, in my opinion, will speak volumes about our staff's ability to develop talent.

Dunleavy was never better than an average athlete. He was just a 6'10 SF who could pass and shoot.

You can't be a 6'10 SF without being an above-average athlete (just ask Greg Monroe). That being said, I'm open to changing my opinion if you have any particular examples. I just can't think of any unathletic small forwards at over 6'9.

I've seen a lot of Dunleavy over the years, but here is an example of Dunleavy operating against elite, athletic defenders:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME8JyfzTFLQ

Relative to his size: he is very coordinated, fluid in his movements (both straight line and laterally), decent first step, explosive enough that he can both beat defenders off of the dribble and elevate around the rim, quick in the open floor (handles are good enough, too, that he can maximize the quickness he does have off of the dribble), and he's in good physical shape.

Again, he's hardly elite in the NBA context, but average in the NBA is well above average in college.

Larry Bird was a 6'9 SF who wasn't overly athletic.

That's a good point, but I'm still not convinced.

For one, Dunleavy is a much better athlete than Bird...

For two, I can't think of anybody in the "modern age" of the NBA who was as unathletic and remotely successful (so as to avoid the mention of Adam Morrison) as Bird.
